Gifted Education
Does your school/school district have a gifted education program?
If so, what grades does the program cover?
How is entrance to the program determined?

Gifted Education
I can only comment on the school I work in because my son is not school-aged.
It's an after school club, it used to be during the school day.
It's for 4th and 5th grade.
Determined by an entrance exam and teacher recommendation.

Yes they are in a self contained classroom for 4, 5 and 6. They have a very intense/enriched workload with extensive research projects and presentations.
They are picked by IQ tests, writing samples, math and ELA district tests, NYS tests if taken (not dinged if they were opted out), reading level and teacher recommendation. They also must maintain a certain average to stay in the program and will be evaluated yearly.
The district also instituted dedicated STEM teachers at each elementary this year to give enrichment to the rest of the students.

Re: Gifted Education
In East Islip there was a gifted program - grades 5 & 6 combined in one classroom for 2 years, very intense program (lots of reading, CW, research projects, science, etc) determined solely by IQ. But I think they d/c it years ago. A shame! It was an awesome class.

Re: Gifted Education
We are in NJ and our school has g&t math starting in 3rd grade. Entrance is determined by the COGAT in second grade as well as an IQ test.

Re: Gifted Education
I'm in North Bellmore. They have a gifted program called ALPHA. I think it starts in 4th grade...I've heard of 3rd graders and 4th graders having ALPHA testing, which I think is a 2 day test, about 45 minutes per day. I don't know if the test is the sole criterion for admission to the program, or if there are other factors.
I think in our district, the program meets during school hours at one if the elementary schools (we have 5). I'm not sure how often it meets. I only have a kindergartener, so it's far beyond me at this point, but I just know a little but about it from going to PTA meetings, seeing Facebook posts, etc.

Re: Gifted Education
Yes.
It's a once a week pull-out for a few hours and they are transported to a different school. Teachers are FT G & T teachers.
Entrance is dependent upon an IQ test and teacher recommendation.
The program is for 1-5 grade.
As an educator, I am naturally very concerned about cuts to non-mandated programs under the tax cap. G & T students need enrichment and differentiation as much as special education students need accommodations, however, only special education is state mandated. For that reason, I am now on the board of my district's Gifted and Talented Parent Association.
Colleagues' children are enrolled in the G & T programs in Three Village and Bellmore. They are very happy with them.

You have to advocate to get your kids in them, was my experience. I had to politely but firmly threaten to take my DS to have an outside IQ test done to make sure he got in because our district used a strict rubric and a third grade teacher had given him a poor write up which caused him to miss the score needed.
My DS has an extremely high IQ and eventually went to an Ivy league college where he did very well. He was not a child who acted out, either, so I do not know why she didn't support him. The school phycologist knew he had a high IQ and that if I came in with an outside, private test score report the number would put him way over the school's acceptance level so he decided to immediately let him into the program. I am pretty sure they didn't want me to create a problem, which I would have.
I has a similar problem with my DH entering high school. I wanted her in the AP classes and stood my ground. She was in them and did very well also. She went to a top tier college. The High school, wrongly, doubted she could do the work.
The moral is, know your kids and stand up for them. As I am sure you all do.

Good to know. I'm in 3V, I was curious how it worked. My DD is only in 1st grade right now so I wasn't sure.
