Gifted Child
I know 99% of us were in gifted programs or have a gifted child....so what better place to ask
Has anyone had a preschool age child evaluated or put into a gifted program?

Gifted Child
If you're truly interested, I would contact LI School for the Gifted (I'm certified in Gifted Ed)

Thank you. I'm not entirely sure if I'm interested or not, just something that was brought up, so I figured it can't hurt to look into.
My personal belief if that my child is too young to really be pushing that right now, and that when she's elementary age we can look into it - do you have any opinions on that? My opinion is obviously not based on research and education, just on feelings, so I'd be curious to hear your thoughts.

If a child tests as gifted, they are never too young for a program tailored to them, IMO. The thing that concerned me about LISG is it ends in 9th grade I believe. I didn't see the point of having DC in the program just to attend our public high school anyway. It is an amazing program though. Many public schools have a gifted program once the kids hit a certain age.

Gifted Child
Most research actually supports identification and programming as early as possible-the vast majority of gifted Ed programs on Long Island are flawed in when they start

Thank you so much for your feedback. As I said, I'm clueless lol. I'll look into it a bit more now.

Just curious what they typically look for as far as IQ. Any insight?

I believe LISG looks for an IQ of 130 and above. This is from an online article: In general, mildly gifted is 115-129, moderately gifted 130-144, highly gifted 145-159.

Re: Gifted Child
I personally would look more for gifted enrichment programming rather than a gifted school. The LISG is for a certain type of child. I would check it out before considering it.
For me, it's most important that my children grow to be well rounded, happy and well adjusted socially as well as academically. I want them to thrive in all areas and have friends, play sports, instruments etc. This can be a huge problem with gifted children - the more gifted they are the more "quirky" they can be.
As for your child I personally wouldn't do gifted testing until over 6. Then they will most likely do the WISC IV (or maybe V) now. I think at that point its more accurate and more helpful within an elementary school setting. At pre-k age there is so much enrichment you can do on your own or through programs - it's really not necessary to have a gifted designation until elementary age IMO and even then, depends on how highly gifted they are if it even matters having that number
HTH!

Thank you for your feedback, I really appreciate it. I do think I would lean more towards a program then a dedicated school, but she's so young, so I'm just trying to gather information should I need it. She's currently in a program where she " studies" another language, and we work at home with numbers and puzzles, and books. I also keep her challenged physically through different sports programs, as she is super high energy. Hopefully I'm doing something right here!

Liu also has a summer program, I'm just not sure when it starts.
How old is your child? If you're not looking for a a dedicated school, I would just make sure you're stimulating them in as many ways as possible. Museums, learning opportunities, travel, reading, problem solving opportunities, open ended projects with a set goal, etc.
Also, be aware that many gifted students can have problems relating to peers their age in school, as mentally they are so much more advanced than other children this age. This can often also lead to behavioral problems, although many times it does not since gifted students also tend to want to please.

Agree 100%.
And we give the WISC V now at 6 or older.
LIU gifted summer camp starts in second grade.
