GHI now requires 12 IUI's !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I just got off the phone with GHI (DH is FDNY so this is his plan) I was inquiring about the requirmenets, Dr. B told me that they either require 3 or 4 IUIs so i wanted to clairfy. Well the lady told me since 1/10 their policy is now 12 IUI's before they approve you. I really feel like someone just kicked me in the stomach.

Don't freak out yet (yes I know, easier said than done). Did you have your first IUI before 1/10? If so, the 12 IUI's may not pertain to you. If you had your first IUI's in 2009, your RE may be able to argue that with your insurance company. Research a little bit further and utilize your RE's office. The office workers deal with insurance companies everyday and know how to word things in your favor.

That would not be good. I also have GHI for my insurance (DH works for the city). I'm currently in the 2WW for our 5th iui and we were assuming if this iui doesn't work we'd do one more and then move on to ivf if need be. I'm hoping the pp is right about being an exception if we started before the new requirements went into effect. I'm going to check with my doctor's office the next time I go in.

 What?!?! I am a school teacher and I have GHI!! 12?!!??! You are kidding!!!!!!
I am only on my 2nd IUI cycle and hopeful that one of these IUIs will work.... but I always figured if I wasn't successful by the end of the summer I would consider IVF.. but, 12?!?!
So, if these IUIs aren't successful I won't be able to do IVF till February?!
Clearly the person running these stupid policies at GHI is an insensitive man!!!!!

I dont have ghi and of course ivf is not covered by my ins ... but i do have a question.. is 12 iui's dependent on age... cause if a person my age (39) had to do 12 iui's then i might be too old by the time it was ok to do ivf...
i would ask this of the insurance carrier... maybe the 12 is for someone who is under 35 years old.

I'm a NYC Teacher too and I would just call GHI yourself. The poster who posted stated that her DH is NYC Fireman, and even though both NYC Teachers and Fireman have GHI, the contract might be different, so check

Yes please check your individual carriers....mine is Emblem which is a subsidiary of GHI.
I believe after 35 it is 6 medicated IUI's.
There are other exceptions to the rule, however not in my case, so please check with your own plan before you have a panic attack like I am.

ETA: I mentioned this to my DH and he brought up a good point.. we're wondering now if it IS 12 IUIs before IVF, if back to back IUIs count as 2  even tough it's in ONE cycle....
Well, whatever- I'll try and found out and I'll update whatever I hear!

Wow. I have GHI (city teacher) and I didn't have any IUI requirements. I was approved for IVF in December. I would call and ask to speak to the IVF coordinator. There is one person who specifically deals with IVF approval - you will get different stories from everyone else. Good luck and I hope that isn't true!!!!!!!
