getting rid of the pacifier

i feel like this has been asked a ton before...but can you tell me when you got rid of the pacifier for your little ones? And any tricks/encouraging words?

DS will be 2 in May, and until recently he only got the pacifier for naps and bedtime. Recently he started asking for it at random times (possibly because he is tired, getting sick or even getting his 2 year molars...not sure). He gets HYSTERICAL when we say no. I mean turning bright red, crying, snot coming out of his nose, coughing, cant catch his breath etc.

Yesterday i tried to give him one with the tip cut off and well, no luck. He just kept saying "no like it" and continued on with the tantrum. He also knows that he only gets them in his crib so he will walk over to his crib and say night night time, or nap time, and ask to be put into his crib just so he can get his pacifier.

I would love to get him to stop taking them...but with his recent reactions I am thinking maybe he is too young? or it is just sucking it up for a few days and he will be better....kinda like CIO when he was a baby? The doctor and dentist both said its time for him to give it up

Re: getting rid of the pacifier

well dd will be 3 next month and had it up until last night.lol I wasn't prepared to give it up but it was broken and told her no more. She slept fine all night. Nap time will be interesting today.

She cried for a few minutes that she wanted it at first but hasn't asked about since.

With dd1 we took it at 1 cold turkey and it was horrible. a very tough transition for a long time

It canr eally go 2 ways, really easy after a few days or really horrible for a while. It's really up to you

we did it at 3. Told them the binkie fairy was coming and she took it away and left them a little gift. It was so much easier to do at 3 bc they kinda "get it" more and understand they are giving it up and getting a present in return. At 2 they just dont understand why they cant have it anymore
