Getting rid of highlights?
I just can't afford highlights anymore. Those who have gotten rid of them, have you just dyed them out yourself or had your hairdresser do it? I just feel weird about doing it myself and then going back to my regular hairdresser. Thanks!

Re: Getting rid of highlights?
I had highlights put in this summer and just got tired of maintaining them. I had my hairdresser dye my hair one color...but I just don't have the money to get it done, so I'm buying the box today.
Even though I've had single process color done, my highlights still come through. I guess I have to wait until they grow out.

Re: Getting rid of highlights?
I get darker highlights and color the rest. The highlights are much more subtle and are easier to grow out. I can go much longer between colorings.

Re: Getting rid of highlights?
I had my colorist do them. Very happy I did it. My hair is so much happier and I save a ton of moolah because of it.

Re: Getting rid of highlights?
I had to go for corrective color and that can get expensive too.. they had to make sure my hair wouldn't bleed through the color they were applying

Re: Getting rid of highlights?
You can dye over them yourself.....just try to choose a color close to yours. It will have to grow out completely before your hair is truly one color.

Re: Getting rid of highlights?
My hair is pretty short, so my hairdresser just gave me a cut and I let the rest grow out on its own.

Re: Getting rid of highlights?
Have them put lowlights over the highlights- basically putting your natural color over the high lights while they grow out...don't do it yourself if you can avoid it...

Re: Getting rid of highlights?
I had my hair dresser dye my hair one color. The ends still get a little light as the dye fades, but it's definitely the best thing I've done as they grow out!

Re: Getting rid of highlights?
I had a friend once who dyed over her highlights herself and her whole head turned pink. the color was out of a box.
I have had highlights for the last 6 years and just got sick of them. I got rid of them last year once to dye my hair really dark brown (I have naturally blonde hair and just highlight a little lighter)but i eventually went back to them since my roots would grow in so light I looked like I had gray hair and dying my hair became so much MORE mainence then the highlights, since I was using boxed hair color every 2 weeks or so.
I just got rid of them hopefully for good a few weeks ago. I went to my hairdresser though. she tried to dye my hair back to what she thought was my natural color so that when it grows in you won't really notice. It seems kind of dark now but I think it will fade a little-I really hope so.
But to answer your question, I was way to scared to do it myself!! Besides, I tried to keep up with my dark hair at home out of the box, and the color just wasn't as good as what she used.
It cost me $60 to have a glaze with color put in my hair, a cut and blow out. IMO it was well worth it, and my hair was nice and shiny and soft afterwards since it was a glaze.

Re: Getting rid of highlights?
I am in the process of getting rid of mine-I have it done professionally. It takes a couple of times to get it right because highlighted hair is far more processed than non highlighted strands.
