Getting over fear of flying
I hate flying. DH and I are going to myrtle beach labor day weekend and we are flying since its a short trip.
It's on a smaller plane - not as big as a normal jet blue type plane.
I know the stats say that its safer than driving. I just cant get over my fear.
Any suggestions? It's going to be the longest 2 hours of my life!

Lots of Xanex!
I flew for the first time in May, dealthy afraid, and those pills made it so easy, also get some Bose noise cancelling headphones, they are amazing!

Re: Getting over fear of flying
I would go see a doc and get an Rx for Xanex. Its a short term drug that is out of your system in about 4 hours.
This is how my doc explained it to me. Take Astma - you have your every day med that you take and your quick acting inhaler just in case - the xanex is the just in case inhaler.
you might be a little tired so have someone else drive but you'll be fine a few hours later.

Thanks. I will definitely have to make an appointment. Is that something he will just give me if I tell him I am flying?

Re: Getting over fear of flying
I feel the same way about flying. We're leaving Monday for a 9 hour flight, and I am so nervous. I know exactly where you're coming from! I've actually thought about canceling this trip! My mother reminds me often that it would be awful to limit what we see and do by NOT flying.
Wine works. So does Tylenol pm. Another poster suggested the noise canceling headphones. I may look into those, too.
Fear of flying stinks, but know that you are definitely not alone!

I'm so jealous that you're going away... I let my fear of flying control my life. To the OP, you will be so glad when you get to Myrtle Beach you will forget all about the flight! My friend just went down there on Tues, she said the flight was so quick!

Re: Getting over fear of flying
All the alcohol, and all the meds cant get your fear to go away BEFORE you get on that plane... Trust me I know, i asked the same question a few times and everyone suggested Valium (which yes works but only while you are on the plane- i needed something to deal with the anxiety I had from then!)
What worked for me was to just stick it out. We flew quite a bit the passed two years and my fear became less and less. In March when we went to Aruba, we were caught in a storm and had terrible turbulence... I stuck it out- took no meds no nothing and shockingly I was fine... Ill still always get butterflies but not full blown panic attacks...

Re: Getting over fear of flying
I hate flying too, it's more about me being claustrophobic than the fact that we're flying. The last time I flew it helped to get drunk, so I could've cared less. But then on the flight back I didn't drink I just watched TV the whole time. As long as my mind is occupied I seem to be okay. Sometimes I'll bring things to read or games to play, crossword books, etc. Or I'll keep my mind occupied by writing down all the things I need to do when I get back from my trip.
