Gestational Diabetes....

So I had my first glucose test last Tuesday. I failed. Took the 3 hour last Friday.

FAILED!

Now I have to go to counseling. I cannot believe it! I was always pretty slim, watching what I ate, worked out. Granted, now I am pregnant. Gained a lot of weight and kind of indulging. I never thought I would have this though!

Anyone have it? Did you successfully get it under control?

I had it with my first, and I am hoping I don't have it with this pg. But, to be honest, it wasn't too bad. I didn't feel I was missing out on anything. GL!

i have it. it sucks at first but you get used to it. every now and then i have a breakdown because i can't indulge like most preggo women but it's worth it in the end. the finger pricking is a pain but then it just becomes routine and i think the diet is actually helping me keep my weight gain under control. i'm plus size to start so not gaining much more weight is a big deal for me. so far i'm 24 weeks and up only about 9-10 pounds. feel free to FM me if you have any questions along the way!

Thanks! I think I will be okay. It's weird. I always ate healthy and was super slim but got pregnant, gained 40 lbs so far (I am 29 weeks) and just indulged. So now it's back to eating healthy again. I can do it, it's just going to be hard, lol. I hate the finger pricking thing. I get squeamish over that but I will get used to it. If I have any questions, I will def contact you.

Re: Gestational Diabetes....

Being a certain weight or eating a certain way before or during your pregancy does not determine whether or not you will or won't get GD. Keep that in mind... you didn't do anything to bring this on.

I had it with my first and after the initial shock and upset, it turned out to be the best thing that could have happened during the pregnancy. I was forced to eat a certain way which helped keep my weight down which helped take the weight off after delivery.

Once you get into a groove with your diet (esp if that is all it takes to control the GD) it will be a piece of cake! Chat Icon

Re: Gestational Diabetes....

I had gestational diabetes with both of my pregnancies and I passed the glucose tolerance tests! Mine came about when I had excess fluid and the babies were measuring larger in my third trimester. The doctors had me test my sugar and sure enough it was high! Let me just tell you that having gestational diabetes was not the end of the world. I went for counseling and was taught how to shop for food ( there are tons of things you can still eat and lots of choices), choose foods high in protein, low in carbs. I found low carb pitas and wraps were ,y new best buds. Stay away from juices and fruit in the morning. They spike your sugars. Unfortunately diet alone was not enough to control mine and was put on insulin. There is nothing you could have done to prevent this. It just happens and most of the time it goes away after pregnancy. It may seem overwhelming now but you will soon get into the swing of things. Just remember you are doing what is best for your baby and yourself and its short term. Try Fairway supermarket. They had a lot of things to choose from..they sell a delicious egg noodle low carb pasta.

Re: Gestational Diabetes....

I just wanted to reiterate that having GD has nothing to do with your diet before or during pregnancy. It has to do with your hormones.

Was going to say this as well Chat Icon It had to do with how your body is handling it all. Sorry you have to deal with this.
