Gestational Diabetes
Has anyone been diagnosed with this? I did not have it with my first DS but this time, since I have PCOS, pregnant with twins and I am 35 I was at more of a risk for it and here I am...now having to test my blood 4x a day and my doc put me on insulin injections 10 units per night

Re: Gestational Diabetes
Yep, I had it and I was SERIOUSLY bummed. BUT, I have to say it's really not that bad. Once you know what you can/can't eat...It becomes a habit like anything else. Do they have you meeting with a nutritionist?

Yes but she is not that helpful in terms of helping to guide my diet...I mean I know I have to stay away from carbs and sweets but anyone know of a good website for diet tips?

Gestational Diabetes
Didn't have it with my first but had it with my second. After I met with the nutritionist and learned about the diet it really wasn't that bad plus it's temporary!

It was borderline, like 128 when it is supposed to be under 130...which is was...but I am seeing an endo for my thyroid and she had me testing my blood sugar and my #s are high even after fasting.

Re: Gestational Diabetes
Yes. I have it now although not nearly as bad as when I was pregnant with my DD. Aside from bedtime insulin, I control it now with diet alone. With my DD I was on insulin before bed and before EVERY meal. I had to test my sugars constantly. I was VERY, VERY strict with my diet too because I was very sensitive to the carbs when I had GD with her. This time, it's much more mild and I have a lot more leeway with what I eat.
I remember when I was diagnosed the first time it felt like a death sentence. But I promise you, it's really not that bad. The insulin makes it so much easier and you get use to all the shots and testing. It becomes second nature. You also get very good at knowing what you can eat and what to avoid. What you can eat will will change throughout the pregnancy depending on hormone levels so don't be surprised if one day something you ate that had no effect on your sugars all of a sudden spikes them. That's normal. The GD is temporary and you will get through it. As soon as my DD was born, the GD went away so there is a light at the end of the tunnel.
It's hard adjusting at first but you will figure it out. If you have any questions feel free to FM. Hang in there!
ETA - Diet wise I was to look at "TOTAL CARBS" on the nutrition label. My day looked like this:
Breakfast - 15 total grams carbs (NO fruit or dairy in the morning as it spikes your sugars)
Morning Snack - 15 grams total carbs
Lunch - 30 grams total carbs
Afternoon Snack - 15 grams total carbs
Dinner - 45 grams total carbs
Nighttime Snack - 30 grams total carbs
ALWAYS eat a carb with a protein, it helps to keep your blood sugars stable and level. Also, try NOT to skip the nighttime snack. A little something at night helps to keep your sugars from spiking throughout the night. When I skipped that snack, my morning numbers were always higher. Hope this helps.

Re: Gestational Diabetes
I had it with both of my pregnancies and its not as bad as people make it out to be. I had to watch my diet and inject insulin every night. I also had to test myself six times a day. It's all about reading labels on everything you either buy or think about eating. Sticking to a low carb, high protein diet worked the best for me. After awhile it just becomes routine. Fairway has a lot of great low carb items. The diet is not as restrictive as some think. I was limited to 60 grams of carbs for each main meal and 30 grams for snacks, which you get three a day. I was never hungry on this diet. At first it may seem overwhelming but you get used to it quickly for the sake of your baby.
