Genetic testing
I just went to LIJ and had a preconception genetic screening. I'm kind of freaked out by all of the diseases they test to see if you are a carrier for. I'm nervous for the results.
Anyone else had this done? How long did it take to get the results? What will they do if they find you are a carrier (besides testing DH)?

Re: Genetic testing
i'm pretty sure a lot of the ladies and some of the guys on here have been tested for just about everything. If you are jewish they test for even more stuff.
I was pretty confident I wasn't carrying anything but tests have improved over the years so they pick up more stuff.
I wouldn't be nervous about it. It's very routine and most of the time results are negative.
Its way better to know before you get pregnant.

Re: Genetic testing
I had the genetic counseling done at LIJ, too. The results took about two weeks. They do test for A LOT, but the chances of you being a carrier are slim. I came back fine for everything! Don't make yourself crazy!!

Re: Genetic testing
OK, not to be a Debbie Downer, but I was totally shocked when I came back positive for 3 genetic disorders (2 of them from the Jewish panel). I'd never even heard of most of them. But, my DH has to have the same ones in order for it to be a problem (not the case with all of them I know, but the ones I had). He came up negative so there are no problems for us combined. So, even if something did come back, you still have to check the other side. Its good to get tested up front anyway, to be certain no issues or to be prepared if need be. Good luck.

Re: Genetic testing
I had it too. It's stressful. Thankfully both DH and I came backwith nothing for genetic diseases.
