General contractor vs Big firm

We are looking to get our basement refinished and trying to decide between using a GC or a big build firm. I can think of advantages and disadvantages to both. With the GC, we are likely to get individual attention but he will need to bring in subcontractors to do the electrical or plumbing work for him. With a big firm, we can expect to get faster results and more stream lined work as all the people doing the work will be their employees. However, they might not be doing only one project at a time. Which do you prefer and why? Please help me decide! Thanks.

We just did a whole house renovation using a GC.

He did sub out a lot of the work but, he is slated to finish a month ahead of schedule!!! We had a great experience (not on LI or I would definitely recommend him).

We used a general contractor..the only thing he subbed out was refinishing and polyeurathaning the floors, but its only one co that he uses for all jobs...everything else was his crew!!! His price was fair and his work impecable!

Thanks for the opinions! I am leaning towards using a GC too-the big firms want big bucks Chat Icon

I have found the least expensive way to go is with a contractor who does all the work himself. We had big company, GC and individual come and he was the cheapest. What is good about a big company is they help you choose all the products.

We actually just used a GC. He subbed plumbing and electric work but we were extremely happy with him. He also was very quick in getting the work done!
