GD Help/Advice
This morning my fasting number was 95. The highest it has ever been. I can't seem to keep my fasting numbers below the 90 and I have no idea why this is. What am I doing wrong? What helps make the fasting number lower? I don't want to be put on medication... they said DD was measuring perfectly at about 4 lbs just a few days ago...

My numbers after dinner are always good and then I don't eat a nighttime snack...
thanks for the hug! This is so confusing and having this makes me feel so ... alone!
I don't want to be put on medication, but I have no idea why I am high at the times I have been...
Some people recommend having a nighttime snack, some don't. Almost all the advice I get is conflicting and I see no consistencies in my numbers. Sometimes I am high, sometimes I am normal. Sometimes I'm high without a snack, sometimes I am high with a snack. I can't figure it out...

Re: GD Help/Advice
I think the night time snack is key. For me, having something small, that has a mix of protein and carbs, about 30 minutes before bed almost always keeps me under 90 in the morning. Nights where I don't, I am almost without fail higher. I don't always want to eat something, but I force myself.
Try it for a few days and see if it helps. When do you see your nutritionist/diabetes educator? If it isn't soon, you should maybe call them for advice.

I hate to say it, but this could be your body. It may be that you can do everything right, but your body is not working with you. For me, being put on meds made me a lot less stressed, and i was able to do what i needed to do for me and baby..

Re: GD Help/Advice
if they want to put me on meds, which I assume they will want to... my before lunch was 110 which is the highest number I have had yet... should I fight for the oral medication first or is it insulin only? I read online about both and I am not sure which one is best or anything... I don't want to just take whatever just because they say so.
Who is on medication and which do you take?

Re: GD Help/Advice
I had GD with my 3rd. for me, the key to a good morning fast number was definitely a snack before bed!! I usually ate some Triscuits with cheddar cheese slices or some toasted wheat bread with a little peanut butter (always balance a carb with high protein). It was amazing how much better my morning fast #'s were with a night time snack (I usually had it about 10 or 11 pm, before going to bed).

I agree with the ladies..you should have a snack at night maybe doing so will help balance things. Try eating a few crackers with cheese. You shouldnt go to bed on an empty stomach. Just dont eat it too late, around 9pm or so.

I am on insulin, but I have pre existing diabetes. I think that if they want to put you on medication, they would most likely start you on oral medication since your numbers, while higher than what they like, are not terrible. It may also just be a simple dietary tweak you need. Talk to your diabetes educator/dietician as soon as you can.

Re: GD Help/Advice
This is my second pregnancy with gd.
The fasting # is a very important #. While there are a couple of things you can do to influence it, if the cant get it under 90 they will opt for meds. That # is mostly influenced by hormones. The new Protocol is to try oral meds first, usually glyburide. I did that with my last pregnancy, but gd is progressive. It gets worse as the pregnancy progresses so I eventually ended up on insulin. I went straight to insulin this pregnancy.
Not having a snack could cause the # to rise. The snacks suggested are perfect. Also, taking a 20 minute walk after dinner can lower your AM # by up to 20 points!
Definitely call the educator or nutritionist on Monday.

Re: GD Help/Advice
my doc started me on oral, but they didnt work out well for me, so i actually asked to either be stopped on all meds or put on insulin. I feel so much better on insulin.. i am a very unique caseand was extremely senstive to the orals.. My educator and doctor, said that as the baby grows and the placent produces more hormones, it can make a person more insulin resistant..you should be eating nearly 6 times a day with a bedtime snack. just make sure you get a good fast of 7-10 hours each night. keep ya head up.. it will get figured out..

Re: GD Help/Advice
Definitely try having a snack preferably one with more protein and lower on the carbs. If that and walking don't help lower your numbers, it could just be a hormone issue and you may need to take some type of medication. As your pregnancy progresses, it puts more of a strain on your body. You may also notice that you can have certain food one week and your sugar is fine, but the next week your sugar is over the normal range.
The place I see goes straight to insulin if medication is needed. According to them, glyburide hasn't been tested enough on pregnant women for them to consider prescribing it.

try having a snack a little before bed...this used to help me. Unfortunately after a while no matter what I did my fasting# would be too high and I was put on glyburide. The ending up having to up it 3 times and I was getting close to going on insulin. It's just sometimes unavoidable. I was worried about medication but it helped and my son is now 2 and doing great

Re: GD Help/Advice
I know they want your fasting # lower than 90 in the morning, but if it averages @ 90, will they consider medication then (some mornings 86, some 95? I have been taking my #'s for 2 weeks, but are only seeing the nutritionist tomorrow for the first time. I have 7 weeks left and would really like to avoid medication.

I have no idea. i go for the first time tomorrow as well and am trying to avoid medication. I have only had my fasting number be high 3 or 4 times so far, 95 being the highest. i was in the 70's when I started and am now in the high 80's... so I have no idea.

Re: GD Help/Advice
Hmm..mine were never in the 70's (well, only been testing for 2 weeks). My fasting numbers are always the highest, all other numbers are within normal limits. I guess I will find out tomorrow! The perinatologist doesn't want to see me till July 13th, unless the #s are crazy (I fax them in weekly)
