GD Girls - Induction question...ugh

Hey ladies, need your thoughts/input. I have GD and am 39 weeks and my dr. is talking about scheduling an induction for next week and said I should NOT go past my due date. I have controlled my diabetes with diet, am NOT ion nsulin and baby is measuring small...6-6.5lbs. Now they usually see bigger babies with GD patients so they are a little concerned about the size but could just be genetics, i.e. I am small person. Or could be a placenta issue and the baby is not receiving proper nourishment...hard to tell at this point but they are slighly concerned.

Now I always go for NSTs 2x a week and they have always been perfect so the induction is not emergency but more electoral but their strong advice is to go forward with it next week and NOT to go past due date. I just cannot find research why I should not go past due date and still feel perplexed. We spent 30 min with 2 different doctors and I am still confused but pron am going to take their advice because they are the experts.

Also last note, I am 2cm and 80-90% effaced so my conditions are favorable for an induction which is good but I feel hesitant and anxious. Overall I am prob going to go through with it but again I have hesitations.

What are your dr. telling you?

I can't answer your question, but my mom had GD with me and I was born two weeks late at 5lbs, 3oz. So bigger babies are not always the case! Just saying!

I can let you know tomorrow if my doc brings up induction. They told me at the start it was a possibility, but I'm doing really well, so I hope it's not necessary. Same situation as you, but my baby will probably be closer to 7.5 pounds.

How far along are you?

I am just trying to figure out if this is 100% medically necessary or are they just watching their A$$es??! UGH so confused.

I had GD with my DD and I am being watched for it again with this pregnancy and both times the OB made it clear that they will NOT let a GD patient go past their due date. I think it is common practice. They are concerned with size as well as any other issues that may arise because of the GD. Growth sonos are notoriously inaccurate so you may have a bigger baby in there then you think and to be safe they want they want the baby out at 40 weeks.

I'm 39 weeks. I definitely read somewhere that induction is not indicated for GDMA1 without other risk factors. It was a healthplan guideline or something, not a blog : ) Sorry I don't have a link.

I'm also monitored by a high risk doctor for my GD and at the outset they told me that if my numbers were well controlled by diet, then I am no more high risk than someone without GD.

It sounds like your "small" baby is the additional risk factor. I wonder if you could schedule a growth sono before your induction date to make sure the baby is still growing? You want to make sure the baby is still thriving in there!

If you decide on induction, at least you have made some progress. I know it's scary, but it's possible it could go very smoothly. I have no signs of being ready at all...

Re: GD Girls - Induction question...ugh

I've had GD with 3 of 4 pregnancies and all have been controlled with diet and they did the did the scans every week to check growth.

honestly, they don't like for you to go past 40 weeks due to the possibiity of other things going wrong. There are other medical complications that can arrise due to the GD that if they know the baby is fully developed it is more beneficial to deliver than to wait.

i was induced at 38.5, 39 and 38 weeks with the 3 that I had. i remember with my first I was a little leery about the induction and after it was all over I was glad I did it. I went in at a little over 38 weeks had my sono, talked to the dr and they scheduled the induction within the next day or 2. Afterwards I found out that while everything was technically ok with my DD at the time, there were some early signs that something could go wrong. thankfully i was seeing a high risk dr who knew what the signs were and helped me to safely deliver my DD.

All of my inductions were successful and I was able to deliver all vaginally.

In my practice with GD they don't like for you to go past 40 weeks, but if you have strong objections to it, I would definitly sit down and talk with your dr about your feelings and why they don't want you to go past 40 weeks.
If you have any questions about inducations or anything just FM me, Good Luck!

Thx girls u are all making me feel better. After crying all day and really struggling with this, I finally feel calm after reading that this is common practice. I know my dr did mention it to me way back when but I seemed to have wiped it from my mind and now it is like bam it's time to discuss it.

So with GD after 40 weeks there is an increased risk of placenta insufficiency, where 1 day you have a normal healthy baby, and the next day your baby could be a still born due to the placenta no longer working, it actually is really scary. So the concern with your baby being small is perhaps the placenta isn't working optimally and getting all the nutrients to the baby. Or it could just be you come from a small family. I don't mean to scare anyone but this is just why doctors really don't want you to go past 40 weeks. I know for me I really want to have an unmedicated birth, but I'm not taking the risk of going past 40 weeks, so if I don't go naturally by Monday, they're inducing me

I got GD on this one.... dr said wont go past 39 weeks...... and that was before I got put on the glucose pill..... I'm 2-3cm, 80% now so hopefully induction won't be as bad.... from what I read online the placenta ages quicker than if you didn't have gc.

Yes I have done research too. I am becoming more and more ok with the idea of the induction. Monday is my next NST and going to make a call then. But still hoping baby comes on its own this weekend.

I was very hesitant to being induced with GD as well at 39 wk 4d. My body took to the induction really quickly and well. One word of advice, if u plan on having an epi, take it before the pain gets to be too bad. I went from 5cm to 8 in under 30 minutes and by the time they hydrated me and i was ready for the epi, i was in excruciating pain with contractions one on top of the other and getting in position for the needle was really difficult.
Best of luck!

J - Sorry I didn't log on after my appointment yesterday. No mention of induction yet. Still no dilation either though, so I doubt I'm a good candidate. Hope your baby comes this weekend like you're wishing!

Ok thanks for the update.

I go back Monday and am curious what they are going to say. If they have reason to believe it is 100% necessary I may go for it. If they leave the decision in my hands I think I may try acupuncture first. I am also trying everything I can think of this weekend!

Re: GD Girls - Induction question...ugh

Here is my update - induction scheduled for Thursday which is 1 day before I am due. Dr said again they don't like to let GD patients go past due date unless all the stars align. For me all my stars align (3 of the 4) except the baby's size. Which yes I agree the growth sono could be off but who knows. So they still left the ball in my court and I said ok let's go for it.

However I am still having hesitations about my decision. I am just worried about pitocin and the stress it puts on the baby and a possible c-sectiom if the induction doesnt take. Or do I wait it out and what are the risks if I do wait a few more days. I am freaked about a stillbirth....esp bc it happened to 2 friends. They were not GD and there are other factors out there that can cause a stillbirth but it has me completely on edge and hit so close to home.

Pumkpinmom when is your due date??
