i am a little hasty b/c it is my first home and i believe that the last cold spell has past....anyhow, i have already planted everything pretty much. i have had strawberry plants out since EARLY march and they have survived snow etc. of course i had a floating row cover over them. but good luck, now is a good time to plant if yuou are buying from gardening centers b/c the veggies have already been hardened off.

Re: Gardening for dummies!!

the last frost is usually said to be the third-last week of april and usually most people feel mother's day is a good time.

what are you looking to plant? veggies? flowers? both?

Re: Gardening for dummies!!

I don't have a lot of experience with veggie gardens (ok, NO experience!) but you could start by marking off the area you want to plant in, and digging up the grass.

Mixing in some compost with the dirt is probably a good idea. Where do you live? We could probably help you find a good nursery.

If you know what kind of plants you want, search for some info on what they like - light, water, fertilizer, if they get huge or need staking, or are prone to bugs.

My sister did some of her veggie garden in whiskey barrels to keep them under control.

What I love about gardening is it's a lot of trial and error. You learn, you try, and you either fail or succeed. It's a constant learning process, and once the bug bites you, you find that your garden is never finished. There's always something that needs to be done. Chat Icon
