Gardeners: Once your garden is underway...

How much time do you devote to weeding?

I HATE WEEDS!!!!

I have used the Preen Weed Preventer and still I have weeds growing. It is really annoying.

What can I use to get rid of them finally....

I usually find myself pulling out weeds at least once a week.

I have a different view on weeds. They're always going to be there. All weeds are are just plants that adapt really well to their environment. They may not look great, but I'm not going to strive for a 100% weed free landscape. I think that's insanity.

I hand pull or use vinegar and water spray sparingly. I pull here and there whenever I'm in the area or am taking time on the weekends to garden. I don't really keep track of it.

I usually weed about 2 times a week. I go out with a CVS or Target bag, fill it up and I'm done for the night.

Garden/planting beds: Done 2-3 times per week. I have a lot of beds. It's time consuming. It's a lot of work to maintain the beds. It tried the landscape fabric. I spent so many hours setting up that bed with fabric and mulch and that did not work. I find that mulch (the one I use anyway!) does not work. I find it easier to just use a small rake regularly to avoid weeds. I rake the soil and pick up the weeds. Or I use a small planting trowel to dig a weed out.

Lawn: trying to go organic this year and next year full force.

Front lawn: Used B-Gone (it was bad!). Used organic fertilizer. Will seed on the Fall to get a thicker lawn to fight weeds. Will use organic weed killing Spring of next year.

Backyard: It's really hard. I started organic only. A few people I talked to at the nursery told me he would take 3 years to get my lawn back in shape using just organic. But I have 2 dogs and DS so I don't want to use any chemicals on that part of the yard.

I pull them, usually when they start to get big, but I don't go crazy with this. Maybe every two weeks I weed the entire garden? There are many areas that need weeding, so I do bits here and there.

Completely weed free is unrealistic--just isn't meant to be.

I do have to say, we used corn gluten on the lawn this year. It doesn't work immediately on all weeds, it's supposed to take a couple years to really be effective. But one bed that had tons of weeds last year got corn gluten in it from the spreader (it's close to the lawn), and this season, I see very few weeds. You can also put down mulch, that helps prevent weeds and also helps hold moisture in the garden beds.
