gals with Gestational Diabetes?

I'm joining the club Chat Icon .

I failed the 1 hour test so bad with a level of 190 that my doc said to not even do the 3 hour and right to the specialist I go.

Tell about what goes on, what kind of diet they make you follow, etc, etc.

I know it's supposed to go away after pregnancy but has anyone had it stay? Both my parents have/had diabetes so I was always told I'm higher risk.

Thanks

Oh lyss i'm sorry. It is crappy news BUT it is really NOT that bad, I swear. There was a meal thread on here a while back (when I was pg, so like mid-late 2011) which was helpful. I also have a parent with diabetes and mine went away after giving birth.
It's all about finding your balance. The nutritionist will help you create a meal plan and before you know it, you'll figure out what your "triggers" are that make your test spike. I, for example, couldn't eat much fruit bc the sugar would affect me tremendously. other people have no issue with fruit.

Like Bear said, it's about balance - specifically proteins and carbs. You can't just not have carbs but you have to pair them with protein. You'll have to test your blood sugar several times a day... sounds horrifying but it's not terrible and doesn't hurt at all.

I've been dealing with it for about 20w now (diagnosed at 13w). It's definitely manageable and most likely only temporary!

I went through it as well and ended up on insulin the last 3 weeks of my pregnancy. As PP said- its all about balance, but no matter what I did at the end, my sugar came back high. However, literally the day I had the baby, it was gone. They tested my sugar for 24 hours and it was always normal. I still have to go for my post pregnancy 3 hour tolerance test, but I've been putting it off lol

I know it sucks to get the diagnosis, but like the other lovely ladies said - it's really not that bad. It's all what you get used to.
My diabetes went away as soon as the baby was born.

Re: gals with Gestational Diabetes?

Just wondering how healthy you normally eat? I am very healthy and while I failed the 3 hour GTT, I have maintained my regular diet and have had no problems with my blood results. I test 4 times a day and the highest reading so far was 102 - and that was after eating candy. I have not cut anything out of my diet or changed it in anyway really. Personally, what the nutritionist recommended for me was not good because I don't believe in eating anything "low fat" or any sugar substitutes - both of which she recommended which I thought was bizarre. I don't know how these unnatural products would be OK for me or baby. She also recommended a ton of fruit which makes zero sense to me. I have a minor in nutrition and I kind of know what I'm talking about but I didn't want to get into it with her - she kept going on and on about "balance" but literally they want you to eat a piece of fruit (which will raise your sugar levels) and then something else to balance it out when you could just have other more balanced selections of food. I stick to whole foods and I just maintain the balance I always have maintained. Anyway, if you want more info or want me to help you with your diet, PM me :)

What works for one person does not necessarily work for someone else. Some can control GD easily w/ diet alone. Others can try and try and try to control it with the same diet and will still need to end up on metformin or insulin. I believe it is very dependent on the person.

I know - hope I didn't come off as disregarding the issue - everyone is different. In fact, I've heard it can also change throughout your pregnancy as it can become progressively harder to control (which may become the case for me). I just also think that some people will develop GDD but they may already have a diet that works for them - and it may be worth trying it out (testing with your normal diet) before switching over to the recommendations of the nutritionist.

Its all about limiting what you eat. Its really not that bad but you just have to limit your portions. Like others have said what works for one doesnt for another. Some get a spike due to eating fruit while with others its carbs. You just have to figure out what works for you. As far as getting it in the future...women with GD are at higher risk of getting diabetes BUT if you control what you eat now you can definitily avoid it.

This exactly! At the very end of my pregnancy, I would have an egg and my sugar would be up. My endocrinologist said at that point it was due to the placenta and out of my control. I wasn't happy about it but I went on insulin. Exercising also helps, but I wasn't allowed to exercise because I had placenta previa. In the end, I have a healthy baby, so you do what you gotta do!
