Talk to me about Scuba certifications
Does anyone know what I need to do in order to be able to dive here in the states? I dove in the carribean several years ago and all we had to do was a 3 hr course in the pool and then I was able to do a 30ft dive.
We are planning a trip to the Keys and I want to be able to Scuba. How much can I expect to pay (an arm and a leg, I'm sure)?

My best friend and her father are scuba instructors, I can ask them if you want.

And yes, Marcie, if you don't mind I would like it if you asked.
I'm doing some research and I see that the hotels offer classes but I can't tell what kind of dive it allows you to go on, etc.

Re: Talk to me about Scuba certifications
it cost me about 500 to get certified 8 years ago, the equipment is the real expensive part. I really dont think it is that much more now. any course that you take that you do not get a certification from is only limited to 30 foot dives. Honestly, to me that is ideal, I have more fun on shallower dives than on deep ones, and its less hassle because you dont need to do the stops and everything on the way back up.
ETA: I took my certification class at Danny's Dive shop in Baldwin, the pool classes were at the freeport rec center and the open water cert dives we did in the rockaways.

Re: Talk to me about Scuba certifications
I'm PADI certified to do Open Water Dives. It was a 6 week course in New Hyde Park, followed by an open water test in Here are some links from the PADI website: http://www.padi.com/english/common/search/dcnr/search.asp?Country=US&State=NY++&City=&Name=&CourseType=OW&Submit=Submit+Query
I think it was about $400 - plus the cost of the equipment. You dont' have to buy all of the equipment for your test - just the snorkel, fins, and mask.

Re: Talk to me about Scuba certifications
From what I know, I remember PADI not being as "good" as the other cert. you can take. There's a guy over in Levittown that's great and has his own shop...Tiedmann's I think it's called. His name is Ed and he's a really nice guy.

Re: Talk to me about Scuba certifications
I think my certification was around $300. It took an entire weekend and then another weekend for certification dives.

If you want to enjoy your trip you will want to be certified before you go because there is a classroom and test part in addition to the dive part and the dive part of the certification is not a "fun" dive. You have to show that you can actually do all the skills they taught you.
