Full-time working moms...

How do you do as far as sick days?

I have taken 5 sick days so far and it's only December ---- and I am a teacher so that's just in 4 months.

3 of them were from when DH was in ICU in the hospital, so technically it would only be 2 if it weren't for that.

I'm just always getting so much guilt when I take a day and I'm feeling SOOO sick right now. I feel like I am going to be so sick by the morning!

Who do you get guilt from Melissa? The administration or the students?

You are entilted to those days and you should use them if you are sick or have something to do. I use all my days because I get sick a lot. That is what they are for. I must have like 1 day left in my bank.

Stay home and relax!

Re: Full-time working moms...

I know what you mean... between well visits and sick visits I feel like we are constantly taking sick days now where as before we rarely took them. As a matter of fact, most of my maternity leave was covered by my accrued sick time.

The thing is DH and I alternate. If it was just me taking all that time, I'd have none left by now. I think I'm doing okay since I have more than 1 year's worth of sick time accumulated at the moment. Not great, but not horrible either.

As for me...I can't remember the last time I took a sick day for MYSELF! Chat Icon
So take it - Emily needs a healthy well-rested mommy. It's just as much a sick day for you as it is for her - and as we know, mommies feel hardly any guilt taking sick days when it comes to our babies.

I know what you mean Melissa...between taking care of DH and Emily, it seems like you forgotten that you HAVE to take care of yourself. SeriouslyChat Icon Chat Icon Don't feel guilty, and don't feel guilty if you feel drop her off in the morning at daycare to get some rest!

My sister actually came over one day to babysit (she had planned to) even though I had taken the day off...

Re: Full-time working moms...

Well, I'm currently at like -17 days because I didn't have days accumulated to use for my maternity leave so I had to borrow them...I am paying back one day per paycheck but I feel like I just can't get ahead. I'm already 1-over for this school year since it should technically be one per-month.

As far as the guilt I get a lot from our AP. She doesn't ahve kids and I just don't feel like she understands that people have lives outside of school. When DH was in the hospital on the respirator back in september and I called in sick for the 3rd day, she asked me"What exactly is the problem?"

I am sure I'll get guilt from her if I don't go in tomorrow!

ETA that I had strep last week --- and got antibiotics for it --- but I feel like maybe the antibiotics didn't cut it because my throat is SOOO sore right now. To boot my nose won't stop running. Oh I just don't know what to do!

Well, you know, I'm a teacher too...so I know the guilt is overwhelming. I HATE to take off because, really, it's easier to just be there, for me. Luckily I am rarely sick.

We get 10 days a year, plus 2 personal days. In 7 years at my current school, before this year, I had only taken 1 personal day...ever, in total! I am taking my 2nd *this year* on Wed. for my Level II...and I feel so terrible about it. I have not called in sick since the 03-04 school year! It's madness!!

Melissa, that's what the days are for...use them! God knows you've had a lot on your plate so far this year. Even if you weren't sick...take a "Melissa Day!"

Re: Full-time working moms...

you gotta do what you gotta do! family comes first. at my job you can call in sick if you are sick and family sick if your kids are sick. same thing really but its more believable than always being sick yourself!

Re: Full-time working moms...

Melissa, I never call in sick even when I was preggo. This year so far as been a bad year for being sick. I was sick 2x myself when I really couldnt go to work. Sara was sick one day and Sammy had minor surgery one day. I feel so guilty taking off but I really had no cholce. I am praying for healthy days to come

I am lucky I have a principal that believes that family comes first
