Frustration re: 1st bday venue. Any suggestions?

All I want to do is host a clam bake/bbq for my son's 1st birthday. I wanted to do it at a beach. We live on a friggan island so who knew it would be impossible to find a place to have it?!

The problem I am running into is parking. I am a Babylon resident. TOB beaches charge up to $40 for non-residents to park and the town will not, in any capacity, work with me on that. Tanner and Venetian are a little cheaper ($25) but there is no way I can ask my guests to pay for that. With the large number of people I am having, it would cost me a fortune to reimburse for parking. I can start the party at 5 and parking is free but that's too late for a 1st birthday party, right?

Robert Moses does not have any space you can rent. The state parks (Belmont, Heckscher) require you use their caterers, don't allow for bounce houses and/or are booked. I thought about renting one of those boats out of Captree or Freeport but what are 30 kids under the age of 5 going to do for 4 hours on a boat? I went so far as looking into renting a beach house but then I put myself in check. It's a first birthday party, not a wedding. Does anyone have any suggestions?

There are beaches on the North Shore you can rent out the picnic area but I think you need to be a resident of that town. And I doubt they would let you put a bounce house there sicne there is way too much liabilty.

I would not do a boat out of Captree. Once again way too much liability with all those kids.

It's far away but I was once at a party in the long beach area, I want to say maybe it was Lido beach. Does Sunken Meadow offer any rental space? I've never looked into it but I just can't believe it's that hard to host a party at an outdoor place on LI. Also, what about using Venetian or Tanner and having people park on the street and walk in (although I'm not sure if they'd even let them walk in).

I'll check that out! Thank you!

I'm waiting for the people to get back to me re: Sunken Meadow and Smith's Point. Has anyone ever seen the Smith's Point pavillion area? I'm not familiar with it and wondering if it would be good to host a party?

I haven't been there in a few years, but the pavilion is the outdoor table area for the concession stand. Definitely not a place for a private party.

Call the Beach Hut at Smith Point. They did advertise that they do tent weddings there. Don't know what the deal is though.

There are places that will cater Clambakes to your house too.

What about the restaurant @ TOBAY? I don't know if they do parties.....I have never actually been there.

I think there is a space you can rent at the Sunken Meadow Park (on the beach) ......it just looks like a a room on their boardwalk ........

Would you be willng to head to the North Shore?

Village of Northport has pavillions for rent at Scudder Beach, Steers Beach, Ashroken. While Scudder isn't the most upscale beach, it's so private it would be like having your own private beach.

Village of Northport
261-7502

The rental is very inexpensive (may even be free at Scudder). I don't think guests would have to pay to park but I'd ask. At Scudder, I don't think it would be a problem. If you have to be a town resident, FM me.

Our friends are host a huge beach party under the Lido Beach mushrooms. I think it's $45 for non-residents to get in. For a first birthday, I agree with you that I'd pay for my guests.

I wouldn't rent a boat. You never know how things will go on a boat in terms of sea sickness. It's nerve wracking for parents to watch toddlers on one.

If this doesn't work out - as much as you have your heart set on this,be prepared that you may need to table it to another year (which isn't the worst thing in the world, he won't remember it).

I tried to book a party there (at Tobay) and was told they do not do parties which I thought was odd. They said we should just all show up and see if we can all get seated. I found that way too risky and opted not to. But call them, maybe they changed their minds.

There is the Sunken Meadow Pavillion and they do weddings there and have a tent, etc you could try.

There is a park in Freeport - I don't remember the name - but I know they rent out for parties. It's really nice. It's on the water, but not a beach. There's a great playground for the kids and plenty of space for BBQing and what not. there's even an area that's covered so it would be nice and shady.
