Frustrated and depressed
I am really at my wits end with all this "allergy" BS.
I have been posting because DS was supposedly diagnosed with a milk protein allergy. I say supposedly because the week he started showing symptoms, I ate dairy, soy, oatmeal & shellfish - 4 of the top 8 allergens..so they said it's hard to tell what it might be, so they ASSUME it's dairy.
So they put him on soy - didn't help. Alimentum - didn't help. Back to breast milk, as long as I remain dairy free - didn't help.
On Sunday, his stool was like pure mucus (sorry TMI)..I freaked out and put him back on Alimentum, at the advice of his ped. & GI.
Well, his stool keeps getting worse..more & more mucousy. He is irritable and I think he is feeding to make himself feel better..he always wants to feed, but then spits up, and has a bowel movement. The GI said stay on Alimentum and go see him Friday. I feel this is serious and has been going on for almost 2 weeks now, and he wants to wait until Friday??????? And the ped. said keep him on Alimentum and follow up with the GI.
I don't know what else to do or who else to go to. I have an appointment with an allergist on Thurs, but I think he is too young to test.
I am so concerned, and so frustrated...I'm worried this could be viral or bacterial, and that we could be fighting an allergy that doesn't exist. I am depressed because I cannot BF, and he is a totally different baby on formula - he's gassy, cranky, and irritable.
I just want a definite answer of what is wrong with my poor DS Thanks for letting me vent...I may not post much, but you ladies help me more than you will ever know

Re: Frustrated and depressed
How was he on the breast milk? Was he just as irritable or just mucusy poops and no other symptoms?
I'm glad to hear you're going to see an allergist- s/he will likely be able to provide you with more guidance.
We just had my 5 month old Eliza tested for milk allergy. The skin test came back negative, but our allergist said it's likely she's too young to come up positive. The week she had blood in her diaper, I had drank WAY more milk than I usually do. Because the symptoms subsided once I reduced dairy, he told me to keep consuming dairy- but limit it.
Have they tested his stool for blood?

On breast milk, he stool was still mucusy, but not as bad as it is now on Alimentum - it's like pure mucus now..I'm scared. But he was not fussy, cranky, gassy. He's a totally different baby on formula.
He had blood in his poop twice, but they said it could be from an anal fissure. The GI swabbed his anus (TMI lol) and it came up negative for blood. Is that the same as testing his poop? No other symptoms - no eczema, rash, etc.

Re: Frustrated and depressed
My dd has a severe milk and soy allergy (we know this because I BF exclusively for 8 weeks; first 4 no limitations and she constantly had projectile vomiting, spitting up, crying, etc.; next 2 weeks absolutely no dairy (no butter, nothing with milk as an ingredient) and she still had projectile vomiting and blood in her stool, but much better overall; next 2 weeks, I tried to remove soy, but found it was really hard and her symptoms didn't improve as much as the doctor wanted, and she still had visible blood in her stool. We then tried Nutramigen, which didn't help her at all, it was actually worse than BF without dairy. We next moved to Neocate and she is a dream! Her rashes disappeared and she stopped projectile vomiting. She still has severe reflux, but its not at the level it was! Nutramigen/Almentium still has a broken down form of dairy in it, and it is still too much milk protein for some babies to process without a reaction.

Personally- I'd go back on the breastmilk. How long had you limited dairy before deciding to go to formula? It takes at least 2 weeks for the milk protein to leave your system. Also- if it IS a true dairy allergy- I'm almost positive that Alimentin is milk based, no?
My daughter Madelyn has a VERY severe dairy allergy and she was FINE on my breastmilk. We didn't discover it until she was given yogurt. Looking back, I suppose her poops were a bit mucusy, but we had NO other symptoms (no blood, no excema, no intense fussiness). Anyway, our allergist was very firm in that I NOT give up BFing- he also said there was no need to limit my dairy intake since she wasn't obviously reacting to it when I nursed her.
Even this time around, he's still adament that I contnue nursing Eliza even though we are *suspecting* a milk allergy will be diagnosed later. Her poops are DEFINITELY mucusy- but again, we have no other symptoms since I started limiting my milk intake.
You poor thing- I can't imagine what you are going through.

I was only dairy free for a week. But when I told the GI/Ped about the mucus, they said to stop BFing and go back on Alimentum.
What could happen if I keep nursing him and he continues to have mucus? Is it going to do any permanent damage? I scared to hurt him, but he's not improving on formula either :/

Re: Frustrated and depressed
I know its not the same situation, but DS was on soy formula and then we switched to regular formula. he had mucousy poop for almost 2 weeks. The dr told us it takes a while for the enzymes to digest the milk to come back. I hope they figure out whats going on.

One week isn't enough time at ALL. I am really surprised the doctor didn't give it more time-especially since he wasn't having acute reactions (skin issues, projectile vomiting). Plus- he's gaining weight well, right? Another big problem for milk allergy babies is not gaining weight well.
How bad is the mucus? At this age- loose stools are totally normal. ESPECIALLY in a BF baby. Eliza's stools are pretty mucusy- but she has no other symptoms of a dairy allergy except for 2 blood streaked diapers. As long as there are no other reactions like a skin reaction (hives or excema) or projectile vomiting after every feeding, I think he'd be fine. Why don't you call the allergist to ease your mind before the appointment?
It sounds like he MAY have a milk allergy- but in your BM it's broken down enough that the only *problem* is excessive mucus. The Alimentum might still have too much of the milk protein in it.
I really think you should call the allergist JUST to get some advice. Personally, I think he'd be FINE going back to BM, but obviously, the allergist would be able to guide you better.

Re: Frustrated and depressed
Thanks everyone
Porrruss: On my milk, his stool was like normal BM fed baby poop, with some mucus. On Alimentum, it's like 95% mucus.
He was thriving on my milk...7 lbs @ birth, and 11lbs. 15 oz. @ 10 weeks. I am sure he is over 12lbs. this week.
No projectile vomit, but he is spitting up more with Alimentum. Before, it was normal baby spit up here and there.
I will try & call the allergist tomorrow. But if he gets worse or stays the same, I'm putting him back on BM.

Honestly- going back to BM sounds like the best option. Like I said- he MAY have a milk allergy- but right now he's too young to get a + on a skin test. The only other way to determine is through a stool test for blood- and that sounds like it was negative.
I adore my pediatrician, but I don't trust her to have detailed knowledge of allergies in babies. Thankfully, she was very willing to defer to an allergist and recommended mine.
Many . Let me know how it goes!
