Fresh Blueberries?

DD is almost 14 months old. She has had blueberries in baby food and yogurt.

Yesterday she had fresh blueberries and LOVED them, but a couple hours later she had hives on her face and neck and her eyes were swelling up. (The blueberries were mixed with fresh strawberries, but she didn't eat any strawberries)

Could be allergic to fresh blueberries but not the ones in baby food/yogurt?

?

Re: Fresh Blueberries?

sounds a little weird, maybe she was allergic to the strawberries? even though she didn't actually eat them, if she's highly allergic and they were touching, she could have had a reaction...

Yeah, I would think if she were allergic to blueberries that you would have seen some reaction before now. Maybe it's the strawberries....

That's what I thought tooChat Icon until I remembered she's had strawberries in baby food/yogurt too..Chat Icon So that would go back to the fresh vs not thing..

I am trying to think of anything she ate for dinner and dessert, cause I know that's where the reaction stemmed from...

Zucchini-has had 1 time before

Piece of chocolate brownie-has had some chocolate before, but never a brownie

some cheeseburger-has had before along turkey burgers, and she LOVES cheese.

I am soo puzzled

Maybe call the ped and ask about it. The ped might recommend giving her a small taste of fresh blueberries or fresh strawberries and then watching for a reaction.

Sounds pretty puzzling to me tooChat Icon

Hmm, sounds like its from the strawberries even though they weren't eaten!

Anything given in baby foods is a tiny amount and may not bring on a full allergy awareness... The only way to tell is to get tested or try the foods again.

Re: Fresh Blueberries?

I'm gonna have to go with everyone else and blame the strawberries... even though it was probably only a small amount of the juice that got onto the blueberries. It's my understanding that blueberries aren't exactly a "berry", but are more closely related to cranberries, which are at the top of the list of least allergenic foods.
