Freedom of the Press
I see in a lot of posts lately that people are afraid that freedom of the press will be in jeopardy. Is this just because of Trumps general hatred of the press or is it something more specific.
I was also thinking about how he handled his press conference, not taking questions from certain news organizations. While I thought it was extremely immature the way he did it, if he just chose never to answer the questions of certain reporters, that's not really limiting "freedom of the press." He would have to take it way further and censor what the press can write, maybe limit who has access to press conferences, etc.
Just trying to get a general sense of what exactly are people's fears right now.

Freedom of the Press
When the (soon to be) President of the US claims that every legitimate news story that he doesn't like is "fake news", that's a really big problem. This morning on the Today Show, they reported that GM decided to invest big money in US manufacturing and create more jobs here - a decision that was made a long time ago. They later reported that Trump tweeted that the report was FAKE NEWS. Really scary that every time legitimate press says ANYTHING against him he will now respond that it is FAKE NEWS - and many of his supporters will just believe him, without verifying the source or accuracy of the story.

I think that the problem of people believing everything they read or hear is not just limited to Trump supporters though. It's everyone. People are generally too stupid or too lazy to research things for themselves in my opinion and I do think that the press is out of hand. I do NOT agree with the way Trump is handling it AT ALL. But I do think the media in this country is a big problem.

I do not believe there should be any censoring of the press if they are printing viable new stories. CNN ran with an unsubstantiated rumor and fake report without doing it's due diligence first. They were wrong, plain and simple. Trump does not have to answer every single news crew that was at the press conference and said no multiple times and the CNN reporter would not let up. Unprofessional..
Also, lets not forget that Obama had it out for Fox News his whole Presidency and tried to discredit them all the time. But of course that is ok because it's Obama.

Yes, I agree that most people do not search out the truth about a news story they hear. BUT, our President should not be calling out legitimate news reporters as FAKE! IF there is a news report that he disagrees with, there are much more respectful ways to get your point across. Trump has made it a point to target the entire media industry as corrupt, biased and unfair to HIM. He is too thin skinned to deal with the media in any professional, dignified manner. By calling out reporters and tweeting "FAKE NEWS" any time there is something he disagrees with, he completely undermines what is supposed to be the "free press" - FREE to report good AND bad about ALL of our elected officials

His administration has toyed with the idea of moving the press core out of the west wing. I think they are looking for any way they can to avoid having to answer to the press. One press conference in 6 months? That he thinks it was okay to call out cnn as fake news but refused to take a question from them I think was an abuse of power. That he responds to everything by tweet so that he can get his message out without having to take questions or defend his words and actions. I think he's putting the press in a difficult position by calling anyone who doesn't suck up to him fake news. It's totally inappropriate for a president to act that way imo. He also lumped cnn with buzzfeed when they did not report the same way at all.

If you are talking about the Russia thing. No, it was not an unsubstantiated report. What they released was: "(CNN)Classified documents presented last week to President Obama and President-elect Trump included allegations that Russian operatives claim to have compromising personal and financial information about Mr. Trump, multiple US officials with direct knowledge of the briefings tell CNN. The allegations were presented in a two-page synopsis that was appended to a report on Russian interference in the 2016 election. The allegations came, in part, from memos compiled by a former British intelligence operative, whose past work US intelligence officials consider credible. The FBI is investigating the credibility and accuracy of these allegations, which are based primarily on information from Russian sources, but has not confirmed many essential details in the memos about Mr. Trump." Link to CNN article BuzzFeed released the unverified memos about the - whatever you want to call it. So, CNN did not release fake info. It says right in the article that the FBI was investigating the credibility. But the facts were that he was presented with the reports. And regarding Fox - they continually spread the lies that Obama was not a citizen. Many of their "reporters" perpetuated the lie for almost 8 years with no apology. So, yeah, I don't know why he would think they were worth his time.

He doesn't want legitimate, capable media covering him. He only wants media who will paint him in a positive light or support the things he said. He's a dictator who wants to control the media and will throw out propaganda to those who don't support him.

Re: Freedom of the Press
I don't think it is jeopardy but majority of news media and outlets are very biased. We are lacking independent media coverage. The news is more entertainment these days than cold hard facts unfortunately

It's in jeopardy if every Trump voter/supporter really thinks everything not from his Twitter feed is fake news.
I follow Julie Mason on FB, really like her. She always has some good insight into the press corp and the world of journalism. People should check her out. She also has a talk show on Sirius, the POTUS channel.

He keeps dodging the press pool, he wants to avoid transparency. Limits press conferences. Attacks reporters. Anything that doesn't agree with him or paints him in a bad light is labeled 'FAKE NEWS'. Normal democratic behavior?

http://www.politico.com/blogs/donald-trump-administration/2017/01/trump-dc-hotel-bans-media-inauguration-week-233766
The Trump International Hotel in Washington is banning the media from its premises during inauguration week.
“Media is not allowed in this week in respect of the privacy of our guests,” Patricia Tang, the hotel’s director of sales and marketing wrote in an email.
A POLITICO reporter attempted to enter the hotel Wednesday morning for a previously scheduled breakfast meeting but was stopped at the door. He then identified himself as a journalist and was told “media” was not allowed.
The hotel’s decision to ban media from property owned by the federal government and from a hotel controlled by the president-elect comes amid a broader debate over media access to the incoming administration. Trump has resisted forming a protective pool around him, instead opting for a “semi-protective pool” that afford the media less access than previous presidents allowed.
Further, D.C. legal code prohibits public places like hotels from denying “the full and equal enjoyment” of its facilities to people based on “source of income,” among other reasons, calling it an “unlawful discriminatory practice.” “Source of income” could reasonably include one’s occupation as a journalist. ...
