I found out the other time I wanted to share a coupon also that it only works if you get the email.
I got the same email for that free photobook but it's only assigned to the account that it was emailed to. So if someone did not get that email, tney can't use the coupon.

Actually, I never got an email with the code, but when I just signed into Shutterfly, I got the pop up saying I am eligible, so check your email AND try logging into your accout as well

You can always try contacting shutterfly. The last time they had a free photobook I got the email and when i went to use the code it said it wasn't valid with my account. So i emailed them and they fixed it for me and gave me free print credits!
