Freddy update
he still will not shower, will not use a cream on his arms for some rash he has and it's getting worse.
He does take his medicine though..and wants to go to PT..go figure.
He says he does things but he doesn't..he says he wears the leg, but doesn't..I don't know if he believes it or not or if he's just lying.
The psychiatrist and the social worker are speaking today hopefully to come up with a solution.
Last resort is hospitalization. I don't even know how that works.
My parents are spent..they were so angry when they came over on Sunday. He curses at them and refuses to do anything to help himself..
on the other hand, he says once he learns how to walk with his leg, he can do things around the house like take out the garbage..etc..
This is rock/hard place. I don't want to see him hospitalized again or institutionalized and I certainly don't want this to be a cycle where he goes in for a few days, then home and it starts again. I've heard stories.
I hope the doctors can come up with something.
Update: Doctors/Therapists/Social Workers all putting their heads together. Psychiatrist is calling Fred today to talk to him about hygeine and showering. Social worker calling tomorrow about the same and seeing him Friday. Fred promised to shave by Friday. He hasn't shaved in 5 months. The PT spoke to him about it as well and fred agreed. He says yes, but doesn't do it. The prosthesis people were at PT with him as well and they spoke to him about it. They said they would do whatever they can to help our situation. They have been wonderful. These are all people who have lots of experience with disabled and brain injured people. I hope we don't have to go to the hospitalization route..that would be bad. I'm not sure Fred would agree to go. It would be a horrible scene.

Re: Freddy update
I'm happy to hear he wants to go to P/T. Do you think they can help with his rash. Maybe they talk to him and let him know he needs to get it treated and cleared up so he can continue to go to P/T. MAYBE coming from them and not his family he may listen.
I take it the bribery route didn't work with reference to his showers. That stinks

Re: Freddy update
he may need to be inpatient again to get into the routine..it seems that after he left Jamaica things went south. it was very structured there and he has no structure at home. he needs it. It's hard to get structure..we're getting him on medicaid but it will take a while..then we can get all kinds of therapy in house for him..that's the key.
he won't go anywhere but to the docs or PT..even then it's a fine line getting him there.
Could you imagine the therapists there trying to get his leg on when he doesn't bathe? UGH!!! i have to send them something..
He has a male PT and mom and dad like him and so does Fred. I just don't know what the scope of their job is.

Re: Freddy update
How does he feel about going back into the hospital? Is he open to going back and knows it the only way for him to improve since he's being so resistant to everyone? Or will he fight the whole way?

Re: Freddy update
On one hand, he says put me in an old age home..on the other hand he says he doesn't need a hospital..
he is conflicted. The psychiatrist said no amount of meds will help this. he needs behavioral therapy. I'm working on whether the social worker can come to the house more than once a week.

Re: Freddy update
I just don't get it. He won't take care of himself at all..he doesn't care. He keeps saying over and over again that he's retired. I tell him yes, from work, but not from life.

The social worker works with behavioral therapy? What about occupational therapy, will that help? Whatever it is, I hope he will receive more visits.

Re: Freddy update
dad spoke to his PT and will talk to the prosthesis people since they are coming today to adjust the leg.
Maybe this will help.
The PT said he's still trying to get his trust and doesn't want to rock the boat too much with him. Fred will turn on and off like a faucet.

Re: Freddy update
What about a psychologist to come- or even a student? DUring my DH's PhD program, he traveled to see a client who wouldn't/ couldnt leave their house. Becuase he was a student I think the family payed like 25 dollars a session.

we're trying to get the social worker (who he likes) to come more often. The co-pay is only $18 so that's fine with us. She made progress with him about going to PT so we figure that she has some influence.

It sounds like a great game plan! And it looks like he has A LOT of people on his side. I he takes the help and advice and turns things around for himself. If he would only take the 1st step he would see he CAN improve.

Re: Freddy update
I really hope this works..I don't have high hopes though.
He really needs the other parts of his therapy..it's so important but he won't have it.
I asked dad to bring another aide in for one or two times to see if he/she could have influence.

Hang in there
Maybe with this new plan, Fred will take baby steps to turn things around. I know it's SO hard and exhausting, but try to stay positive.
