Freddy update
It's becoming increasingly hard for mom and dad to manage him. He doesn't want to do anything. The therapists and social worke think that maybe we should start considering placing him somewhere.
We have to talk to the doctor when he gets back from vacation and give this some serious thought.
he spends his whole day in bed, won't shower won't do anything. he is not aware of his deficits and won't wear the prosthesis.
He made so much progress but now, we may have to let the professionals decide.
This is heartbreaking.

I'm sorry...
Who knows? Maybe getting him placed somewhere will be the best thing for him.
I would have thought being home, would have been good, but maybe it's not for him.
Again, I'm so sorry...

Re: Freddy update
he says he doesn't want to be there with mom and dad and wants to be in an institution..he doesn't really know what he is saying.
I guess he just wants to rot.
I've never seen mom and dad so down.

Re: Freddy update
I think that maybe a residential facility may be a good thing for him. He can interact with others who may be dealing with similar disabilities. He'll also have more people there to care for him and help him learn to care for himself.

I'm ok with that. After seeing what my parents have gone through in a short time I can tell this is not working.
I just don't know about this stuff. I guess it will be a private pay plus medicaid. We will have to get him on medicaid.
That stinks.

I'm sorry. This must just be so difficult for you and for your parents. I can't imagine how upset you all must be.
At the same time, I have to agree with this:

Maybe being in a place with more care and with other people going through similar disabilities will be good for him - at least short term, but maybe longer. It may help him adjust a bit better, and hopefully the people there would be able to teach him how to be more independent. He at least would have others around him who can relate to what he's going through. Maybe that will help???
Again, I'm sorry that what something that was supposed to be so exciting and happy (Freddy finally coming home!) has turned into more stress and more heartache.
I'm SURE you, your family, and his docs / support staff will be able to figure out what will be best for him.
to you and your parents!

I'm not sure, but I have a feeling they have all different types of facilities. There are people of all ages with similar problems. Maybe it won't come to this, but, if it does, it may turn out to be a good thing.
Good luck!

Re: Freddy update
all I know is I feel like it's too soon to give up. I feel terrible for my parents.
Fred doesn't realize the gravity of the situation. he doesn't understand he has these big deficits.
I can't run over there all the time and shower him and deal with it.
Mom and dad are there but it's too much for them to deal with.

Re: Freddy update
Let's brainstorm some options then... I'm sure people will have ideas. You tell us if they are practical or not.
Mine are:
Are there other people who can take "shifts" or at least times where they give your parents a break and can keep Freddy company regularly? At least once or twice a week? Maybe if Freddy gets to interact with more people regularly, he'll feel less like he's living with parents and more independent?
Can he go to out patient therapy instead of having people come to the house? I think you mentioned this before, and I may have missed an update on that.
Is a home aid practical on a regular basis, or is that too expensive?

Re: Freddy update
the home aid isn't practical because he barely gets out of bed for the therapists..
there is no one else to go and take a shift from my parents excpet me. They don't want me to and they end up hanging around anyway because they want to spend time with me too..
Yes, he can go to outpatient therapy, but getting him out of the house is a challenge. He digs his heels in and refuses to do anything.
