Freaking out about listeria
I went to my favorite Italian place tonight and told DH we were not getting antipasti because I can't eat prosciutto or sopressata and if I couldn't eat them, he couldn't either! Well, the owner knows us very well and just brought out a cold antipasti and bruschetta (which was amazing). I said no to the antipasti at first, but caved and had a piece of prosciutto and a 3 pieces of sopressata. I've been freaking out since because I'm afraid I've contracted listeria and I'm mad at myself for giving in so easily. I can say no when it's not there, but I can't let amazing Italian meat go to waste
If I got listeria, what should I do? Should I call my doctor tomorrow and ask her about it? I'm just so afraid I'm going to go for my 20 week sono and something is going to be wrong with the baby because I was stupid enough to eat that.
DH doesn't get it either. He tells me I'm overreacting, but IF something did happen, I'd never be able to forgive myself...

The chances are really low. I bet in Italy they eat all of those meats and are fine. If you have listeria you will prob become very sick and have to be hospitalized.

Re: Freaking out about listeria
I am just copying and pasting from something I wrote to someone else on LIF about Listeria. "I know Listeria is a big fear on LIF, but it is very rare. 2,500 people in the US contract Listeria> each year. Total. Out of the population of America! Out of that 2500 people about 833 of the people who contract Listeria are pregnant. Out of those 833 pregnant people, the majority of the women are from Latin decent and it is from a homemade cheese called queso fresco.
This is such a small number that the percentage of people who contract Listeria> is .001%!!!!!
In Europe, where there aren't these crazy restrictions on what pregnant women eat the numbers are even less, and Listeria is under the "rarer disease" category."
I am not telling you to go out and eat cold cuts, you have to do what you are comfortable with, but maybe this will give you peace of mind.

Freaking out about listeria
My understanding is you don't even start to see symptoms for something like 10 weeks. There was just a whole listeria scare over local cantaloupes where I live (I'm in NC) and the news reports said "symptoms usually show in around 70 days" which I thought was a little crazy! Food poisoning is different -- you'd already know by now if you have food poisoning or salmonella.
If it's your favorite italian place, and the owner knows your pregnant, then they keep things very clean and very fresh. I wouldn't worry about it at all. Especially after the fact. At this point, it's just your imagination running wild. There's almost no risk.
However, considering how you feel right now, I wouldn't do it again.

Freaking out about listeria
Not even necessary to worry about it. As a PP said, it is such a small percentage of people who contract it yearly.
I don't even consider it a concern, because there are doctors who let their patients eat deli/cured meats. I personally don't choose to eat deli/cured meats, but I'm not going to worry if I do.
I'm with your DH on this one...you may be overreacting.

Unless this was some backdoor bodega, you really have nothing to worry about.

It does make me feel a lot better about this instance, but I will not be doing it again seeing as I'm a psychopath and will freak out again. I think what made me panic the most was googling "listeria in pregnant women" and reading the horror stories. Google is not your friend... It just took us so long to conceive, I would hate to do something to jeopardize it that could easily be avoided!!!

Freaking out about listeria
While there are some foods that have a higher chance of having listeria, I personally don't think its a completely avoidable thing.
Just recently mc Donald's apples, certain cantaloupes, and some bagged salads have been recalled because of listeria. Things that you would think would be safer then cold cuts.
Stay away from Google. If you want cold cuts you can always heat them up to kill of any potential listeria. Pregnancy is supposed to be a wonderful enjoyable time in your life. By worrying about every little thing you are going to stress yourself out and raise your blood pressure, which is not a good thing at all!!

Agree with others - it really is just a completely freak thing. I think you have a much higher chance of something bad happening just by going into your car each morning. Certainly there are some foods that are more likely to carry the disease than others but don't worry yourself crazy. I am sure you are 100% fine.
