Re: For those you who quit smoking cigs.....
Nothing, but there wasn't any of this the first time I quit (20 years ago). The second time was 12 years ago, and while I didn't use anything, I didn't smoke that much, maybe half a pack a day. I got a really bad cold and cough actually, and it hurt to smoke for a few days. When that passed, I just decided not to take it up again.
But you don't want a nasty wrenching cough to help you out. A few people I know like the patch, but if you are small in size or weight, you might want to try half a patch initially.
Good luck! It really does get much easier with time. Also, avoiding situations or places where I wanted to smoke helped in the beginning. You can't avoid all of them, but some might help. And I would say eliminate as much stress from your life as possible, don't take on too much while you are doing this, I think that helps too.

Re: For those you who quit smoking cigs.....
I was a pack a day smoker for about 15 years and just quit on March 16th. I have not touched a cigarette since and believe me If I can quit anyone can. I never once tried before to quit until March 15th. I used the patch and it worked great for me. The first week was tough but for me I felt that if I can just go 24 hours without smoking that I can do it! The first few days I would do nothing but read online all the bad things that smoking does to you (I was trying to scare myself even more so I would not smoke and apparently it worked). Also I took up running and love it so that helped me a lot as well. Trust me you can do it!!!!
Good luck and let me know how it goes!

Re: For those you who quit smoking cigs.....
I was never a big smoker, but I did smoke on regular bases (1 pack a week maybe) for a about 2-3 years. I stopped , "cold turkey " the day I found out I was pregnant with DD . December 25th of 2006 I still get cravings once in a while , but nothing I can't handle. Never used anything to help with cravings .

I used pregnancy (although when I'm out drinking, I still cheat). Temptation is still there, but didn't get craving too much while pregnant.

I quit 4 1/2 years ago with the patch. I stayed on it a long time, but my dr. said it was ok. I have never touched a cigarette since then. Im like an alcoholic, i can never just have one so I won't.

same thing for me... i was closer to two packs a week though.
my brother who smoked a pack a day quit cold turkey about a month ago. he had a really hard time. cold sweats, heart palpations, chest infection, etc. however, he looks and feels fantastic now. the doctor did put him on wellbutrin-- an anti-depressant that also has a nice side effect of helping smokers quit.
good luck to you!

Good luck to you...everyone has their own way but this is working for me

Re: For those you who quit smoking cigs.....
I tried the patch and felt like I was going to have a heart attack! So I quit cold turkey, I did have the motivation of starting to try for a baby. It's tough, but if you are ready you can do it!

Re: For those you who quit smoking cigs.....
Don't laugh, but it started by getting hypnotized...
Do I think it worked? Absolutely not, but that fact that I actually was willing to try anything to break the habit was very motivating to me.
After that day, I smoked my last cigarette and went on the patch. I wore step 1 for 6 weeks, then went on vacation. Because I was in the water so much, Step 2 wouldn't stick, so I stopped wearing it and never smoked again.
For me, it really wasn't that hard. I did have some cravings at stressful times but it wasn't as awful as I thought it would be. I think when you are REALLY ready to quit, you can do it. Other times I had tried to quit were unsuccessful because even though I knew how unhealthy smoking was, but I wasn't emotionally ready to let go.

I quit cold turkey after trying all the other quit smoking aides. I read the Easy way to Quit Smoking and it did the trick.
I recommend that book without hesitation to anyone who is thinking of quitting.

Re: For those you who quit smoking cigs.....
I have done the patch AND cold turkey.
My advice, is that you do it when you are ready. It won't work any other time.
BTW....the cold turkey was the time I was REALLY ready, and it worked.
