Low fat protein and high fiber foods...fruits and vegetables worked for me....

look at the south beach diet...more of the maintenance recipe parts..where the foods are high in protein and unprocessed carbs...

I eat a lot of cheese, fruits, peanut butter etc....

If you are borderline I would just stay away from sugar and things like white bread and plain bagels....

Re: For those with GD

i read somewhere and was told the no carb is bad - it can produce ketones or something. Your body needs the whole grains. I wish there were more recipes or a diet online here somewhere to get a better idea. I'm going for my GD test in a couple of weeks and am worried.

My father and grandmother have/had diabetes and all i've wanted lately are sugars - fruits, ices, etc..

Laurie when I had GD I thought I would die with the diet. But, I survived. In the mornings I ate an eggwhite and cheese omelette with a piece of whole wheat toast and butter. Or whole wheat french toast with a low sugar syrup. For lunch I would have a turkey sandwich or grilled cheese or peanut butter and for dinner I would have chicken with a vegetable and rice. You can have carbs but in limited amounts. If having pasta or rice you can have one cup. Always make sure you have protein with a carb. The protein will balance out the carb. If you are not getting enough carbs throughout the day your body will start to produce ketones. The guidline I had to go by was..
Breakfast: 15-30gms of carbohydrates
Mid Morning Snack: 15-30gms
Lunch: 45-60gms
Mid Afternoon Snack: 15-30gms
Dinner: 45-60gms
Evening Snack: 15-30gms
When you go grocery shopping concentrate on the total number of carbs per serving and don't worry about the sugar. The carbs is what makes a difference.

That list looks pretty close to the meal plan the diabetes educator gave me.
She modified it a little because I had bad hours at work.
