My DH would take a fork and put a piece of food on it and give it to Julia to put in her mouth, and then she would take the fork and do it herself till she got the hang of it.

Do you make a fork readily available to him? Like, just put the food on it and leave it for him? I do that already with Ava and she gets it, but not consistently.

That's what I do as well and he does love to use it and lately has even been using to pick up food himself. It is not consistent though. Most of the time I have to help him pick up pieces of pre-cup food with the fork.

Yes, we always try to eat dinner together. Good point, actually! That's how he started drinking from a cup--he was watchign me and watchign me and then one day asked to drink from it himself.

I put a fork on Jared's tray for him to use. He just picked it up one day and used it. I guess he was watching me feed him and learned quickly.

I don't remember doing anything terribly special, just like Stefanie I just made it available to him at meals, maybe showed him how to scoop but after that pretty much its trial and error. I guess he got tired of the food falling off and mastered it!
In the beginning you can try foods that are easily pierced by a fork and stay on or scoopable by spoon - not too messy.

Re: for those who's DC eat with spoons and forks
I always just give him a fork/spoon with his meal.. and I guess he just learned from us...
Now If I forget to put a spoon/fork on the table he "asks" for ours...(which I gotta say he does pretty well with )
A few times- I "stabbed" the food for him, to get him started, and just kept making a big deal, when I ate off the utensil..
It starts off as them just playing with it, but he'll get it!

I used chocolate pudding. It sticks to the spoon pretty well and she likes it.

Re: for those who's DC eat with spoons and forks
I can't even remember the number of times I've told him "use your fork, use your spoon!" Repitiion was key in our house and Jack has been eating with them both since before he was two. Also, how about taking them to pick out a fun set? Not sure how old your kids are, but Jack has a Thomas set and a few others (cheap from Target) and he specifically asks for which ever one he wants at the time.
I also make it a game..."Show Daddy how you scoop up your applesauce with your spoon!"
