For those who have nanny/full time babysitter
Do you let them drive your child? I hate that DS is always cooped up in the house. I would like him to be outside, taken to park, stores, library, activities like gymboree etc. I just cant wrap my mind around someone else taking him If you allow your child to go out with the sitter/nanny, do you have any ground rules?
Edited to add: nanny does take him on walks around the neighborhood, but has not taken him in car yet. there is little to nothing in walking distance to my house -- the closest park is still far.

Re: For those who have nanny/full time babysitter
My mom watches DS now and I fully trust her to drive him. We had a nanny when we lived in the city and she didn't have a car (and neither did we). We trusted her to walk him places in his stroller but they didnt go on public transit or in cabs

my mom watches dd and i trust her to drive i would be hesitant to let dd in a car with a nanny/sitter but know plenty of people that do it (have them pick their kids up from classes etc). its a matter of what you are comfortable with. i would definitely ask the nanny to take your LO out for walks though

Yes, we have an au pair and she drives the kids. It took us a while to feel comfortable with it, but it's so much easier to have her driving.
We did some "lessons" on how to properly strap the kids into their car seats (how tight the straps have to be, placement of the chest clip, etc) and we also did a number of driving trips with us in the car as well so we could see how she drove.

Re: For those who have nanny/full time babysitter
It's a little different for us b/c we're in Queens so a lot of things are in walking distance. Our nanny takes DS to Gymboree a couple of times a week, the library, to the park, and walks every day. I couldn't imagine having them stuck inside every day without doing other "things" like Gymboree. DS needs the stimulation and I think it's important for him to learn the socialization skills. When we move to LI, DS will be in daycare or with family. Family will drive him around. However, if we were going to have him with a nanny again, I would definitely want someone who would be able to drive him around.

DD will be 4 in sept and DS is 13 months. they have never been driven by anyone other than my husband or myself. I know I will eventually have to get over this as DD will be going on the bus to kindergarten but so far we have managed.

For those who have nanny/full time babysitter
We have a nanny and she drives our kids everywhere. I would not want to be couped up all day with the kids so I don't expect her to either. She takes them to swim lessons, the park, play dates etc. I love that she drives. She will even go to the store etc if we need it. But my biggest concern is that if something is wrong with my kids that she be able to drive to the doctors or hospital. I figure if I trust her enough with my kids I can trust her to drive as she is not going to put herself or them in danger. But I love our nanny and she treats my kids like her own.

This is how i feel. I guess I just need to get used to the idea. Do you ask you Nanny to tell you in advance if she is going somewhere, or do you just rely on cell phone if you need to get in touch?

Re: For those who have nanny/full time babysitter
We have a nanny and she drives the kids locally. She is a cautious driver and she has been our nanny for over 5 years and only the past 2 she has had to drive. She will not take them on the highway though - that is her choice.

Re: For those who have nanny/full time babysitter
Do a license/background check through DMV - you want to make sure she has no license suspensions, priors for DWI, serious tickets/points, etc. I would also have a serious conversation about disabling her phone for the fear of texting while driving.
I completely understand your fear - but if you do a little proactive digging and take steps to ease your mind a little, it may go a long way for helping your worries.

For those who have nanny/full time babysitter
We have babysitter 3-4 days a week and I do let her take DD out. Sometimes it's a hassle shuffling car seats around but I'd like the kid to get out and do things....

She usually tells me if she is going somewhere different or asks me if it is a bit further away but she always has her cell on her so I don't mind. She tells me every evening what she did with the kids. It is good for her and for the kids to get out of the house.

How do you do the DMV background check?
You can google NYS license check or background check driver's license.
I know when a sitter or nanny is registered with care.com or sittercity you can request to have one done through the site but there are other sites that, for a small fee, will run one for you.

Re: For those who have nanny/full time babysitter
Our nanny doesn't drive but it wasn't a criteria for us when we were looking for a nanny at the time. We live walking distance to a park and she's there with DD often - multiple times a day and has met alot of other Nanny's and other kids. If she needed to take DD to the dr she could easily call my mom who lives not too far. And in a major emergency, she would just call 911 (not sure I would want her driving in a major emergency anyway).
If she did drive, I'm sure I would feel like you and need to warm up to the idea.

Re: For those who have nanny/full time babysitter
PLEASE PLEASE make sure for 1) the DMV search is from the DMV, not some bogus report.
2) if you run a criminal check, MAKE SURE it's from NYS https://iapps.courts.state.ny.us/chrs/SignIn
This checks within EVERY county of NY state (Richmond, Kings, Queens, Nassau, Suffolk, Westchester, etc, etc). It will show you misdemeanor/felony cases from years back. However, legally you can only hold someone liable for the last 7 years unless they are currently serving probation.
The search costs $65.00 per name. Also, you MUST gain authorization to run any check on anyone. Find a generic release form that allows you to run their information, and have them sign and date it. Have them include their name, date of birth, SSN, current address and driver's license. Any ALIAS (maiden name) names that might have gone under as well.

Re: For those who have nanny/full time babysitter
No. Luckily we live in a VERY walkable neighborhood so they have no reason to ever drive anywhere (and even then I doubt I'd allow it unless truly necessary.) Our nanny takes them to the park, school, the doctor if needed, library, friend's houses and it's all walking distance.
