? for photography buffs

If I want to take a face shot, what is the best background to use?

my friend does makeup and she is trying to build a portfolio of pics showing some of her past work...

TIA!

Anything solid is usually best.
But most important is front and overhead lighting. Try using natural light if you could.

Depends on what type of impression she is trying to make. I personally do not like black, although it is what most would use. Grey or very subtle patterns of greyish tones work best IMO. Also, be careful with the overhead lighting. Although it is necessary, it can create false bags under your eyes......

Not necessarily outside. But maybe in front of a big window. Or a room with a lot of natual lighting.

ITA. And watch for back-lighting.

Keep in mind that the color of the background will bring out colors in the face. You should probably stay away from greens, especially if the person has some green or yellow undertones.

North Window Light. You can't go wrong. Find a window that is facing north and use that natural light. I personally would use a black background.

Re: ? for photography buffs

I think almost anyting could work if the aperture is low enough to keep the focus on the subject.

I've found some of the best lighting for portrait work is on a cloudy day. The lighting is very even and there's no glare. It's the easiest way to get a shot without shadows. Of course with sunlight or with some strategic lighting you can create effects, but you really can't go wrong with daylight on an overcast day.
