For Mothers Who Adopted

I have a few questions for moms of adopted babies:

-How long did the process take from beginning until end for you? (like first meeting for general information to the time it was official and your lo was with you)
-Was your adoption a domestic or international one?

Not a mom. But an aunt.

My niece was adopted from China. They had to go to get her. I would guesstimate 8mos to a year from initial to pickup.

For Mothers Who Adopted

We did relative adoption, so my process is different. My DS was in foster care and we had to become Foster parents before he was placed in our home. The process of becoming a Foster Parent and having him placed in our home took 8 months. Longer then it should, we were dealing with two states, which didnt help matters. During the 8 months, DH and I would go visit him once a month in Maryland.

The actual adoption took another 3 years. Again, this should not have taken so long. I know people who's regular domestic adoption process didnt take this long.

My friends adopted. They had set it up while the woman was still pregnant. But they took him home the day he was born.
The adoption wasnt official until a few weeks ago. Right around his birthday.

We adopted internationally. It took us about 3 months
to research and interview agencies. From the point that we really got started with the process, paper chase, home study, until we had DS home it was an additional 9 mos.

Every adoption journey is different I don't know if you can ever say there is a standard amount of time involved. Best of luck to you.

Friends of mine did a Domestic Adoption.

From the time they started the process till their daughter came home it took over 2 yrs. Probably closer to 3.
Once they were matched with a birth mother it all went so fast. She was already about 4 months along and she delivered almost a month early. My friends just missed her birth, they couldn't get there in time. And they took her home from the hospital.
She is now a yr old and they adoption was finalized about a month ago.

we adopted our son from Korea. the whole process took 18 months. IE: we applied in February, were "matched" with him in August, and then were able to go to Korea to bring him home the following August. So it was about a year from when we were matched with him till we actually got to meet him. it was TOUGH!!! BUT he was with an amazing foster family who took him to Gymboree classes, out to eat, even taught him a few English words since they knew he was coming here and the agency did a check up every month so we got that info every month (how much he was growing, new things he was doing, etc.) and we got a new picture most months, too. so that made the wait a little bit easier. when we went to bring him home, we were in Korea for about 5 nights. THEN we had a few "post placement" visits with our agencys social worker and about 6 months after we came home, we went to court here in NJ to officially finalize the adoption.
he is amazing and I wouldn't change a thing!! everybody says he couldn't be more "our" kid personality wise- perfect match he has adjusted so well so far (hes been with us for about 20 months) and is just the light of our lives.
I know the Korea process is changing A LOT right now. it now requires 2 visits, a court appearance in Korea, and people are waiting close to 2 years after being matched with their child until they can travel.
overall though... adoption is just such an amazing thing... and I wish you good luck!

I just spoke with a gentleman who adopted his two kids from Korea. Can't remember if it was N or S. He said entire process was around 16 months.
