Foot Turning in When Walking
Does anyone else's child have this problem? Did it correct itself or did they need orthotics? Emma's left toe turns in when she walks and it seems like it's getting worse.
She will see the ped. in a couple of weeks for her well visit, so I'll bring it up again.

Re: Foot Turning in When Walking
Kind of like pigeon toe or do you mean around the ankle?
DD had both but they got better over time.
We did see any pediatric orthopedic and he told us she would grow out of it, but I would definitely ask.

Re: Foot Turning in When Walking
No problem! I know when I talked to the ortho he said they rarely give kids the foot braces that they did years ago as most kids eventually grow out of it on their own even without the brace.

Half my family had those foot braces but my mother sent me to dancing school to correct it... ballet worked as a kind of physical therapy for me. Just throwing it out there as a future option if you think it's not getting better on it's own.
I don't think I would have grown out of it but my podiatrist said it was over-diagnosed back in the day which is why they leave it alone now.

Re: Foot Turning in When Walking
My young brother did. The PED had us "tickle" the outer edge of his foot. We "rubbed" the outer side of his foot in a stroker manner. His reflex was too open his toes towards the outside of the leg versus inside.

Re: Foot Turning in When Walking
My brother did. My mom just kept correcting him when she saw him walk like that.
For some reason I want to say to put the feet on the wrong feet to correct it, but for the life of me, I can't remember where/why I think that. It might confuse DC though and they might think that the shoes on the wrong foot is correct.

Same thing here. My foot turned in as well and that was the beginning of my ballet career - loved going to ballet and it did help the problem

I like the ballet idea..gives me a medical reason for spending more money on another activity

I meant put the shoes on the wrong feet too.....not take your kids feet off and switch them....
I'm glad I didn't make this up-sometimes I have the most 'useless' knowledge in my head.
But yeah, dancing works!

Re: Foot Turning in When Walking
My DD had a problem when she was small, probably around your DD's age. Your DD is just over 1 yrs, right? She would toe in but it never affected her ability to walk and run well. We brought her to a pediatric othopedist and he called it tibial torsion and femoral antetorsion. But there was nothing to do, he said she would most likely outgrow it and she did. I believe he wanted to see her again if the problem was still there at 5 yrs old but it's been gone since she was 2 or so. A pediatric ortho is def worth going to see to confirm what it is even if your ped is not worried IMO just to be sure. He also said that it was probably worse when she was tired and it was true.

She will be 2 in a couple of weeks She is able to run and walk fine though. Thank you, if the ped. isn't concerned, I think I'll make an ortho appt. to put my mind at ease

Re: Foot Turning in When Walking
DD#1 had a rotation and the hip and at the knee that made her foot turn in quite abit. She would fall all the time, she even cracked her head open once by tripping over her own foot.(She got stitches) The Ortho said that now a days they really do not do anything for it because studies show that by the age of 8, as the bones grow , they tend to straighten on thier own. they wind up in the same place as those who wore braces. He did tell me keep shoes OFF her as much a possible because the weight of the shoes will only pull her foot in more. And he said to NEVER let her sit in a "W". She is now 8 and it greatly improved.

Re: Foot Turning in When Walking
Ahh, so that's why they say no W sitting.
She doesn't wear shoes in the house, only socks. Her hip is a little weird too though (I posted about that a while ago). When she runs, she sort of looks like a weeble wobble

Not to be too nosy, but was she born with hip dysplasia? The reason I ask is my daughter was. They say her pigeon toe (and her weak ankles for that matter) are typical for kids who had hip dysplasia.
Though DD's case was sufficient enough to warrant corrective action when she was born (she wore a brace to keep her hip in position for 2 months), many cases are much more mild and do not require any treatment as kids grow. DDs brace treated her hip, but the toe thing she just needed to grow out of.

Re: Foot Turning in When Walking
Most toddlers grow out of this type of thing...
Just keep an eye on it and if she doesnt outgrow it keep bringing it up to the ped...
I was pigeon toed as a child..the ped kept telling my mother that I would out grow it...He was right that most cases do correct themselves by age 10. I was, however, one of the few cases that dont...
Look up Femoral Torsion.....

No she wasn't. The hip thing I brought up to the ped. at her 18 month visit and she said she was fine. She always rotated her hips around on our visits as a newborn. When she runs it's almost like her leg swings out a bit, then the toe turns in. I'll have to video it
