Food allergy moms, question re: parties
How do you handle things like birthday parties? Specifically if you have a child with a dairy allergy what do you do at cake time? DD is two, so old enough to know that birthdays mean cake but too young to understand that there are things she can't have. She's okay with cake, but the frosting is the concern since she's allergic to uncooked milk. Do you bring something just in case? Do you take a wait and see approach and hope there are cookies or something else they can have?

I would bring something she could have just incase they had no other options but cake.

My 18mo DD has a similar dairy allergy, uncooked milk and cheese. She seems ok with butter, so I've let her have cake and frosting before, but if she starts to get a rash, I take it away (I still let her eat the cake though). If there are options like cookies or fruit, I give that to her instead and hope she doesn't notice the cake.
We've been to many pizza parties and she absolutely cannot tolerate cheese, so I end up bringing lunch for her to a lot of parties. I find that as long as I sit her a slight distance away from the other kids and give her her food before they get their pizza, she doesn't seem to mind eating something different.
My DD is still young enough though, that I don't think she really notices that she's having different things than the other kids. Talk to me again in 6mo-1yr.

Haha, probably true. Enjoy while you can! I've definitely cut the top off of cupcakes before but the last party we went to the cake had so much frosting there was no way I could just give her the cake. I managed to talk her into a cookie and thankfully she didn't have a fit over the cake. Another party I saw the cans of frosting out on the counter and was able to check the ingredients (canned vanilla has no dairy- it probably should but thankfully for DD it doesn't). I just have a few parties coming up that I definitely wouldn't be as comfortable asking if the frosting was homemade. I guess I'll just throw some cookies in my bag as a worst case. I know homemade usually has just a touch of milk in it. Does your DD usually do okay with it? I've often been tempted to just let her try it and see what happens.

I brought either cheeseless pizza or a bagel and a cupcake to every party. Keep in mine many parties, most we went to were ice cream cake.
Etd to add cutting to top off the cake etc would only make my kids more self conscious. Just easier to let your kid pick what kind of cupcake they want at home. Make a batch, freeze and pull out for parties.

My nieces and nephews have tons of severe food allergies. My sister brings their own food and desserts every single place they go.

I always ask what kind of food will be served and bring something similar for DD. She hasn't minded having something slightly different - she's 2.5.

Thanks everyone! Very interesting to hear how everyone handles it. I'm sure as she gets older and the kids are all sitting at the same time and being served the same thing it will become more of an issue if she doesn't get the same. For now, they're 2 so they barely sit together to eat.

I never thought about freezing cupcakes. That's a great idea. I just knew I didn't want to have to bake a batch every weekend for each party. Do you ice them? If so, do you mind sharing your recipe or what you do?

Ds ad a severe egg allergy when he was younger (grew out of it around age 2.5). At parties I would follow him like a hawk and made sure everyone knew to NOT feed him anything unless I was able to read the ingredient list (for home parties).
At cake time, I would bring my own egg-free cupcakes for him.

We never eat any food provided at birthday parties. I bring all of my own including cake and/or cupcakes.
