Food Allergies and BirthdayParties
How do you deal with the 2? Do you bring your own cake and food?

I bring either my own pizza I know is okay or a plain bagel, and a cupcake. If she can eat the food I let her, if not, I pull out what I brought. My Dd is allergic to things like milk and chocolate to name 2 so it is rare to go to any party where she can eat. Parties are always pizza and 99% seem to be either chocolate and/or ice cream.

How old is your child. How does DD respond to this? I don't have a child with allergies but I just imagine this must be hard.

She has been doing this since she was 3.5. She is 5.5. Honestly it hasn't been as bad as we feared. She is more upset by the seat she gets. Also the OTHER kids comments can be rougher, than her not getting the same food. We make cheeseless pizza with applegate farms pepperonni or grilled chicken...just tomato sauce and a topping. We have tried diya (sp?) Vegan cheese but she only likes it here and there. She helps me make the pizza which helps and she gets a pink cupcake so she is happy. The down side is the kids are either upset and want hers and ask why they can't have that...or a few say haha you can't have this, or my food is better than yours, but she gets that at school too. (She is in a peanut free class so I am vert limited in what she can bring. She like chicken drum sticks, salads etc, they bring mac and cheese, chicken nuggets). It gets easier but I let her choose what she wants so she isn't sad.
What is harder are the favor bags, and school favor bags. Pretty much every party we get a bag full of chocolate candy, or chocolate lollipop, or chocolate cookie. Valentines day she got a ton of chocolate and a few strawberry candies (she is also allergic to strawberry, orange and shellfish). We are very lucky to not have nut or severe allergies but still it is hard. I do often have to have convo about how lucky she is bc I am always asked why she can't bring peanut butter bc another child is allergic to nuts, but the class can bring chocolate she can't have, including the child that is allergic to nuts. That is more difficult to explain to a 5 year old.

DS is 3 and allergic to soy protein and soy flour. He barely eats anything as it is, so I usually bring stuff I know he will eat. GoGurt or yogurt. His cookies.. Sometimes I can call the place ahead of time and find out what is in the food they will have. He has been allergic to soy since birth so it is normal for us now.

I always bring a cupcake, although sometimes the parents of the bday child will get a bunch of nut-free cupcakes from the local bakery for all the nut allergy kids, and will let me know ahead of time. DD is allergic to tree nuts.
If the party is at a place that I don't know, or I don't think the standard pizza will be served, I call and ask either the place or the parent so I can be prepared if I have to bring my own food.
My DD doesn't care (she just turned 4), but there is usually an issue with a kid who is upset they are not getting a cupcake. it always makes me feel badly, but my DD doesn't care.
