focal point?
So I am taking a childbirth class on sunday and they just called to tell me to bring an object to be my focal point during my breathing exercises. I was just wondering what you are all planning on using as your "focal points" - I never even thought of this. She said it could be a photograph or a stuffed animal or anything....

For me, it was an hour into trying to push out my 9lb baby.

I imagine you'd use it while pushing. That was the only stage of labor that was really really difficult to me. I wanted my eyes squeezed as tightly shut as possible for that entire hour and twenty minutes!!!! For me, keeping my eyes closed and counting with the nurse was exactly what worked. When she offered me a mirror to see what was going on I was like "NO THANKS - I'M KEEPING MY EYES CLOSED!!!"
My contractions were really, really short and close together while I was pushing which made it really hard because I wasn't getting contraction "support" -- I imagine if you get a 20-30 second break between contractions even at the end, it could work to have something to focus on.
In my L&D class, our teacher just told us to imagine ourselves in our favorite place -- to choose in advance where that would be so we could remember it when we were in labor. For me, it was laying in bed in my DH's arms. It's just the only place in the world I am completely at peace and happy. With him standing next to me the whole time I was pushing, holding my shoulder, wiping my forehead, whispering encouragement in my ears -- it was easy to remember that favorite place.

Re: focal point?
Thanks ladies! I am going to use a photo of my puppies. I have no idea at what point we would use it - but I will find out Sunday at my class.
