flying with formula
I am flying for the first time tomorrow and we use powdered formula and I make the bottles as needed.
What is the best way to do this? Travel with formula already made with an ice pack in 3 oz bottles and then combine them to make 4oz bottles?
Can I travel with an unopened bottle of water (I always use Poland Springs) and then make bottles as necessary?
Its a 2.5 hour flight but with travel time to the airport and waiting for flight etc... I am just not sure what to do.

Re: flying with formula
We had the formula portioned out in a carry container, and the water already measured in bottles. They did take the bag to swab the zipper of the bag and the bottles to test for explosives. Took maybe 30 seconds tops.

This is what we did too and we did not have any problems.

Re: flying with formula
I just found this on Jetblue's website:
Traveling with Formula, Breast Milk, or Juice
When carrying formula, breast milk, or juice through the checkpoint, customers will be inspected, however, the customer or their baby or toddler will not be asked to test or taste breast milk, formula, or juice. The TSA Security Officers may test liquid exemptions (exempt items more than 3.4 ounces / 100 ml) for explosives.
When traveling with a child, in the absence of suspicious activity or items, greater than 3.4 ounces of baby formula, breast milk, or juice are permitted through the security checkpoint in reasonable quantities for the duration of the customer's itinerary, if the customer perform the following:
Separate these items from the liquids, gels, and aerosols in your quart-size and zip-top bag.
Declare you have the items to one of our Security Officers at the security checkpoint.
Present these items for additional inspection once reaching the X-ray. These items are subject to additional screening.
Customers are encouraged to travel with only as much formula, breast milk, or juice in their carry-on needed to reach your destination.

I think the key is to bring only the amount you'll need for the flight + travel time.
You could try bringing it in the large container, but I personally didn't want to carry it on the plane with me. Or risk them not letting it on the plane.

Re: flying with formula
You can travel with the bottles already made in a cooler bag with ice packs or if you want, you can definitely travel with an unopened Poland Spring bottle. The regulations are much different when traveling with small children.
I have traveled with both. I take an unopened bottle of water to mix with a powdered medicine DS takes and have never had a problem. Done this on 4 flights. They will just ask permission to check the bottle. They will usually ask you to open the bottled water and then they place a strip of paper over it. 3 out of 4 times it was done in front of me. Just be sure to let them know you have liquids for your DC as soon as you put your stuff on the security conveyor (sp?) belt. I am always very upfront about it and never had a problem. I've take frozen homemade food for DS, water, milk in bottles.

Re: flying with formula
You can put 4oz in the bottles for babies - there is no liquid restriction.
ETA - I have brought a large container as well and had no issues - I was just quesitoned about it and my wipes.

Re: flying with formula
You can do it however you want, we've done it each way (water in bottles & formula separate, powder in bottles & bottles of water separate, already mixed with ice pack, etc). All they will do is test it.

Re: flying with formula
Sorry to crash, but can anyone tell me what you do with the big container of formula to make bottles once you reach your destination? Just pack it in your checked luggage? I hate to say it but I just have a huge lack of trust for baggage handlers and don't want them anywhere near my baby's formula.

Re: flying with formula
we just flew and i had 4 cans of alimentum, 3 bottles of poland spring 1 small bottle of chocolate milk and milk in a sippy cup
the sealed bottles/cans they put in a machine which checks for radiation. they put a test strip in the sippy cup to make sure there weren't any explosives in it.
it took a total of maybe 3 extra minutes.
there is an unlimited amount of rtf formula, water, powder for formula, or milk for babies when you fly

Re: flying with formula
There is no restriction on how many ounces when it comes to baby formula.
What I did was pack as many bottles filled with water that I would need for the flight and pack a container that held my formula portions.
Once I got to my destination I went to Target and bought formula, diapers and wipes for the length of my stay.
In my luggage I packed any remaining bottles that I would use for an entire day's worth of feeding.
For example, my DD drinks 5 bottles per day. I packed 3 in my diaper bag for the flight (with the water in them, 6 oz in each bottle) and then I packed the other two empty bottles in my luggage.
Also in my diaper bag were diapers and wipes for the plane ride, an extra outfit, an extra bib and burp cloth.
