fluorescent lights
anyone change their bulbs to fluorescent lights? We moved into a bigger house and DH is obsessed with saving money so bought them for all the high hats. Figured we'd save when we get the bill.
Figured I'd ask if anyone did this and noticed any difference in the electric bill

i assume you are talking about compact fluorescent lights (CFLs)....
everyone/company seems to be jumping on that bandwagon these days...
keep in mind that about 50% of your energy bill is from heating and cooling appliances. Only roughly 10% of your "light bill" is actually for the lights
The savings from using CFLs in an average American home only add up to $142.50 over the course of an entire year! That's if every light bulb in the house is changed!
when you subtract the cost of the actual bulbs you end up with about $127-ish in savings per year.
so $127 is still $127 right? keep in mind that CFL bulbs also contain mercury the same as a full size fluorescent bulb...
do i have any CLFs? yes, we had them, mostly to make my FIL happy because he thought he was saving...
for anyone that disagrees with this.. check out the Energystar.gov site....

Laws are being written to ban traditional incandescent bulbs over time.
CFLs, like all fluorescent lamps, contain small amounts of mercury as vapor inside the glass tubing, averaging 4.0 mg per bulb . A broken compact fluorescent lamp will release about 4% of its mercury content. Safe cleanup of broken compact fluorescent lamps differs from cleanup of conventional broken glass or incandescent bulbs. After an effective cleanup, government advice is that any potential short term exposure offers no significant health risks to adults, including pregnant women, or to children. Fluorescent bulb use results in about 70% less mercury put into the atmosphere than incandescent bulb use, but broken bulbs typically introduce the mercury directly into a populated indoor area.
We have mostly CFLs, and are replacing the remaining incandescents as they burn out.
