Flu Shot

I have never gotten a flu shot before but I feel like I should now. I'm pretty sure it's not too late to get it, right?

Did anyone else get one this year?

Re: Flu Shot

I didn't get one this year in time and I GOT THE FLU..... IT was HORRIBLE..... I thought I was dying and SUPER scary with fever spikes to 102 that tylenol wouldn't bring down......

I'm not getting it now because i've already had the flu this season if not I'd be getting the shot.

It's not too late to get it. High Flu season starts mid January

Did they give a reason why not? I'm curious. I asked my dr. and she was like "yeah you can" but was not like oh yes go now...it was kind of vague.

My OB said she "has" to recommend it according to the obstetrics rules but that after as many years as she's practiced she really didn't feel that strongly about it one way or the other. I had never intended on getting it (never got it before) so her view made me feel better about my decision.

That said, it's a very personal decision either way. You have to do what YOU feel comfortable with.

Re: Flu Shot

I got my flu shot...but I am a nurse who works in a hospital!

I got it after the first trimester...doctor recommended it. The majority of my pregnancy is during flu season Sept - March so...I didn't want to risk it!

Re: Flu Shot

I got mine in my OB's office. I declined it the 1st time around, but when I went in for my next appointment, my Dr basically FORCED me to get it.

He said that the flu can actually become life threatening if you get it while you are pregnant. Just him saying that to me was enough to make me say "ok, I'll take it".

I work in a hospital (in finance though) so I am exposed to a lot of stuff.

I haven't even had a COLD this winter yet - which is very unusual for me - so I am hoping I did the right thing by taking it!

Re: Flu Shot

i've never had one, my kids dont get them, and i didnt get it this year.
Im more of an "all or nothing" type of person, since the flu shot only decreases your chances and doesnt prevent it- i opt not to get it.
If i knew that none of us would get it for sure, then i would get the shots.
ETA: so far we have been very lucky, and i would feel terribly guilty if any of us got it.

Re: Flu Shot

I didn't get it and I am okay with that now. I tossed back and forth about it though just like you are doing. Should I? Shouldn't I? I nearly drove myself crazy!

While it's not necessarily too late, once you get the shot it does take about 30 days for it to kick in (per one of my doctor friends). So if you got it now, you'd still be susceptible almost all of January.

Re: Flu Shot

i got it, and am very glad that i did. it can be life-threatening for you and your baby if you get the flu while PG. why not get the shot? even if it just reduces my chances of getting it, or the severity of the strain if you do get it, there was no question to me as to whether i would get it.

My doctor really wanted me to get one - but he doesn't allow them in the 1st trimester - but as soon as I was out of my 1st trimester he gave me one (it was the thimerisol free version).

That was on my list of questions that I asked today. The nurse practitioner told me to get it after the first trimester.
