Flipping out. I have a tip question for y'all.
Lets say you order lunch for your company and found a service that will deliver food to you, from anywhere, for $17.00 delivery charge.
Tip is not included. Would you tip? If so, what percentage or fee would you think is fair?

$3-4 tip but it depends on the total of the order.
My assumption is that the person delivering the food isn't the person who is getting the $17.

Re: Flipping out. I have a tip question for y'all.
I would still tip b/c I am sure the delivery person isn't seeing any of that $17.00. I would tip based on the size of the order, like $1 a person or something like that.

I would tip a couple of dollars, depending on the size of the order.
For that large of a service charge, I would think that some of it is going to cover the deliveryperson's salary (that was the case when I did waitressing at a catering hall).

I would definitely tip...When we order pizza, I tip about $5-6...as far as percentage, the bigger the order, the bigger the tip

Re: Flipping out. I have a tip question for y'all.
I would probably still tip depending on the size of my order and the current weather conditions: generally 10-15% of the total. I am pretty sure the guy delivering is not the one getting the $17...
UNLESS, and I think this has become pretty common, he works for a delivery service that makes money by having contracts with restaurants delivering to clients... Then I would think about it because most of those guys basically work for themselves...

ITA. Are you ordering for a large company or a couple people in the office? I feel like most large orders have the tip automatically put in, but I guess that's not universal. I tip any delivery person a couple of dollars though- usually $3-$5 depending on speed of delivery, weather, and how many singles I have on me.

The guy that runs the business also does the delivery. It's a 10 person office, so our orders are fairly large but not crazy.

Just to follow-up... The delivery charge (as advertised on their website) should have been no more than $17.00
They charged $42.00!
Someone in the office said they've always given him a 20% tip. Unbelievable. When I called, I got a different story about other fees that are not listed on their website.
Needless to say, next time we make an order, I'm finding out the price beforehand and I may just go pick it up myself depending on where it is. Crazy.

$42 IS RIDICULOUS!!! I wouldn't even bother ordering from there again. Unless all their food is covered in gourmet chocolate...find someplace new!

Re: Flipping out. I have a tip question for y'all.
It's not even the food place. We order from anywhere, they go pick it up and deliver it to us. We used to have such a problem getting people to go pick up food, and the things available around work aren't great.
But the other fees he quoted me just aren't adding up. They are 15 miles from our office, so if they charge per mile that's going to be even worse.
Sigh.

Based on this, I can see where the tip is not included and would tip the delivery guy but the charge for providing this service should be clear and $42 is ridiculous unless they are picking food up from several restaurants.

Re: Flipping out. I have a tip question for y'all.
I spoke to the guy and I think now he was just enjoying the non-hassle of getting 20% over the delivery fee all this time. Now that I'm questioning it, I'm sure the charge will be different.
I wouldn't pay $17 for delivery either but there are no other delivery services like his in the area. We could just order from places that will deliver to our location but it's pretty limiting. I'm not sure what I'm going to do yet. We only do this once a month so it comes out to about $500 or less per year and if the price goes down now that someone is paying attention, we may just stick with it.

Re: Flipping out. I have a tip question for y'all.
20% of the FOOD order?? I could see 20% of the $17 dollars when the driver isn't the owner.. but NEVER 20% of the food order itself.. that's just nutty.

We use a service called Stony Brook Express, it is not the restaurant you are ordering food from, this is an outside service that they pick up & deliver from anywhere to anywhere. So if you want to order from a certain restaurant that doesn't deliver or you're outside the restaurant's delivery area, this service will still pick up from them & deliver to you. It's super awesome bec you can order from anywhere then! But it's only a $10 fee & we still tip the driver but he's not the owner.
In your case for $17 (or $42 ) and it's the owner I would not tip him.

Thats crazy! He is already charging you a really high delivery fee. I usually tip a standard $5 no matter what unless its a TON of food or its raining, then I'll tip a biit more

That's who I'm talking about.
I don't want to name names on who is delivering to us, I'll FM you. But look at the disparity between your price and mine... You are a lot closer to them than I am obviously, but still. Quite a difference.
