Flat Head / Helmet Moms...

Please recommend your Pediatric Neurologist... if you liked them, obviously.

I'm going to the Ped with my 4 month old tomorrow to ask for a referral for an evaluation & would like to know (ahead of time) if anyone has used and of the doctors she will recommend.

Also, what exactly happens at an evaluation? Do they tell you at that 1st appt if a helmet is needed?

We skipped the neurologist and went to a cranial specialist. We went to Cranial Technologies in Paramus (closest location in our area). They have treated over 50,000 plagiocephaly cases - it's all they do. They offer a free evaluation where they perform 3D imaging and take measurements to really determine the level of plagiocephaly. We were told at that first appointment that he had moderate to severe brachycephaly and moderate plagiocephaly and that a helmet was definitely recommended. No pushing from their end though and it was left totally up to us to decide to do the helmet or not. We were very pleased with them, the way they run the office, no wait times, clear instructions, very helpful when we had questions, etc. DS had his cranial helmet for 3 months and we absolutely felt he was in great hands.

We brought both of my boys to Dr. Mark Mittler (a neurosurgeon).

He was able to tell immediately that G. needed a helmet.

He is an excellent doctor and I trusted him with my other son's life.

My son was first prescribed to see a physical therapist to see if stretching and massage could help him lean on the other side of his head more and correct the problem that way. We worked with:

The problem did not correct itself so we did go see a pediatric neurologist. My mom took him (I'm a FTWM) to see:

She said it was a very hard office to visit b/c there were a lot of kids with difficult problems. She was glad I didn't have to go. But she did have nice things to say about Dr. Rosenn. He prescribed a helmet and we went here to get measured and order the helmet. And have been back a few times for adjustments:

They were nice here. The receptionist was a little short with me a few times but... The man fitting my son was very patient and nice.


On a side note, we did get the helmet when he was around 5 or 6 months old. He's 10 now. He wore it for maybe 5 months, but we opted just to wear it at night. When he got it, he just started to have great control over his neck and was sitting up most of the day. And since he wasn't laying down, we felt it was only needed during sleep at night. My peditrician wasn't in favor of my choice but it worked out fine for us. My son has an *almost* perfect head and it's still filling in. The neurologist is happy enough where he in not prescribing him a second, larger helmet and we are done.

Why did I choose for him only to wear it night? I didn't like the stares and questions we were getting out in public. It annoyed him. And it was HOT. And it smelled after a while even though I tried to keep it clean and dry.
