Fixing up Wood Floors-- Please come in! :)

Hi Ladies... As some of you may know from my post the other day we are on a serious apartment hunt, our lease is up in 20 days!! Yesterday my husband and I FINALLY found something worth taking into consideration. The location Upper Glendale, Queens is just what we we were looking for and the apartment itself has been renovated and looks pretty nice.

The ONE thing that really needs help are the floors. I am no expert, I dont know if they are real wood floors or not, all I know if that they are old looking. It is a darker wood and it spans the entire apartment. The landlord said we can take it upon ourselves to spruce them upChat Icon The good thing is that my dad is handy and can help us with whatever we ask him. I described it to him and he said without seeing them he thinks the best option is to varnish them...?

Do you ladies know of any ways to make these floors look decent again? Can we take a sander to them? Would that be a really big project? I want to make them nice but at the same time its not my house, so I dont want to invest too much!

Any input would be GREAT! Thank You!Chat Icon

Probably sanding and poly-ing them would be your best bet.

Sanding is a big and messy project.
Varnishing takes a couple of days to cure too.

Are they scratched up or just dull looking ?

Since they are not "your floors" you can always just polish them with some floor wax.

Excuse my ignorance but what do you mean by "cure"?

They are just dull looking... like almost having a grayish tint.

cure = drying time. Usually a couple of days for the varnish to harden.

honestly since it's not your permanent place I'd probably just give them a really good cleaning with murphy's soap and then buy some area rugs

totally agree with this! you wont see a dime back on your investment, while your ll will get the benefit if he rents it after you or sells it

Murphy's will leave a film on the floor.
Give em a good clean with warm water with some vinegar in it (very lightly damp), then polish the floor with some orange glo or bona.
I wouldn't usually recommend either, but since the LL is so indifferent about the condition of the floors to begin with, whatever it takes to make it satisfactory for you.

Thanks Ladies... all good ideas! We have decent sized area rug so that should cover some of it...

The thing is I can see how beautiful the floors CAN be... but like you guys said, Im not gonna invest my money in it.

Im bringing my dad to see the apt. w/us again today... he will be able to tell me if they are beyond help or if they can look good with just a good old washing.

Thanks!!
