First timers who aren't having a baby shower...

How do you get all the stuff you need for the baby? Do you buy it yourself? Do your parents buy it for you? Do you have a party after the baby is born?

I've decided to not have a baby shower due to what is going on with the baby, but don't know if we should have one after he is born and out of the hospital and recovered.

I have no clue if I am having a shower. But if not, I am waiting until after the baby is born to go get stuff. I know we will get some stuff as gifts before and after, so basically, as long as we have the crib, furniture and essentials for the first week, we can go then.

I don't think I'm getting a shower, for now I'm using hand me down stuff. I know my parents and some family members will help, but we live in a one bedroom for now, so there is no room for an entire nursery. Our lease is up after the baby is born so we might as well wait it out then having to pay to break out early and get a bigger place.

Re: First timers who aren't having a baby shower...

There are definitely people who have showers after the baby is born. I've heard of that before.

Do what you feel comfortable with.

I'm sorry.

I am sorry about what you are going through. I would have the shower after the baby is here but definitely do what you are comfortable with

Re: First timers who aren't having a baby shower...

I'm sorry you're going through a lot.
This isn't my first time, but we didn't have a shower b/c I'm Jewish and we didn't want to have one
I did register and we did put the furniture in the room.
When I came home from the hospital we already had lots of packages delivered to us and many more came.

My sister and SIL got us the main things we needed b4 the baby got here. The bassinet and the car seat. Once I had that I was fine. Got a ton of diapers, lotions, creams, formula, etc at the hospital. We also did a layette at Denny's so when we knew it was a boy my MIL went to pick up the boy layette and washed everything.

The swing, bouncy, toys, clothes etc you don't even need
Burp clothes, some clothes, bassinet and carseat are the most important thing Chat Icon Chat Icon

The main things you need are diapers, formula, car seat and a place for baby to sleep and some sleep and plays and stuff for baby. Maybe a little bathtub and towel and some soap. Don't go too crazy worrying about what things you'll need. You may want to pick up the "necessities" yourself and then have a great big party after he's born, home from the hospital and doing great! Yes we purchased everything ourselves except DH's parents bought us the stroller as a gift. We got a whole bunch of hand me down clothes from sister in law and so didn't buy one single article of newborn or 0-3 month size clothing. We also got her old car seat so didn't buy that either.

We live in a small apartment and so didn't buy a changing table or dresser. Only piece of baby furniture we got was a crib. We also opted not to buy things that many others buy such as bottle warmer, wipe warmer, sterilizer.

My family does not believe in showers. You do what you feel comfy with. It all depends on the people as to what they receive - meaning my MIL bought all the furniture, my mother bought mostly everything else that I needed including diapers and things. I also got hand me downs. My family does not really believe in having anything in the house until the baby is here so I am forbiden to buy anything. I am sure that if you have a shower after it will be very special bc then everyone will get to see the baby!

Re: First timers who aren't having a baby shower...

IMHO, family/friends will buy you gifts regardless if you have a shower or not. I would still register, and just make sure you have the essentials prepared for when DS is born (ie infant carrier, diapers, wipes, diaper cream, formula, clothes). And even with those items, I would register for all first and wait it out to see what gets purchased. Give your parents/siblings a heads up where you are registered so they can pass along the info to anyone that may ask.

My parents offered to buy the furniture for DS before my shower or anything was even booked. And they didn't consider it to be part of my shower gift.

Side note - not sure how you feel about hand me downs, but I have tons of stuff left over from DS that is in great condition. If you want it, its yours! Just let me know Chat Icon

I would definitely have it afterward. Im sure all would totally understand. Its really not a big deal to have one afterward. Im sure there are many girls that had their baby before their shower.

I hope all is going ot be ok. Im praying.

Re: First timers who aren't having a baby shower...

A little of both...
Work did get the car seat for us, but we bought the extra base ourselves.
We bought the crib and nursery furniture.
In Laws are going to buy us the mattress
My brother and his wife bought the stroller.
My parents bought the pack and play.
I won a swing/high chair.

Everything else that is big on our list we'll have to get ourselves. It kinda sucks but it's our fault we don't have any local friends so no shower LOL

People still buy gifts for the baby regardless if you have a shower or not, its just a matter of when you receive the gifts. Im not having a shower b/c Im Jewish but we will register and then when the baby is born people send/bring gifts. This is what my friends who are Jewish do and the day the baby is born their registries empty very quickly!
