First time home buyer needs some help
My family and I are hopefully looking to buy our first home by the middle of next year. We are looking into Nassau and Suffolk but not too familiar with many areas.
I am looking for an area that is safe and has a great school district for my daughter, she is going to be entering K in the fall of 2014.
The most we are looking to spend is $350,000 and $10,000 in taxes. Although I would be happiest if the house was in the $325,000 range and taxes were $8,000 or less a year.
DH works in Uniondale and will be driving to work so the furthest in Suffolk we are willing to go is Ronkonkoma/ Lake Ronkonkoma or Holbrook area.
If anyone has any suggestions on areas they love with the above criteria please let me know. Please feel free to FM me as well.
Thanks so much.

We bought in Lake Ronkonkoma and are within your "happiest" range and I love my house! When we moved, DH worked near Uniondale near Hofstra. I would have preferred to stay in Nassau but we found soooo much more bang for our buck in Suffolk.

We were looking in your range and even lower. We were looking in Sachem SD. We bought in Holbrook. Our house was less than 325K, 5 BR, 3BA, 100x100 on a dead end st. Taxes are about $9k. We love it here. Our street is so peaceful and we are located near everything. I work in Lindenhurst and am originally from Nassau, so I am always traveling to that area. I take Sunrise to work and there is never any traffic. It's an easy commute. I hardly ever take the LIE anywhere, but it is 5 min from my house. HTH

Just wanted to say that I take Sunrise to work also to the same area and hit traffic every morning The merge is a PITA so it depends on what time you leave. I'm usually driving through anywhere from 7:30-8.

We just bought in West Islip. Good school district and there's plenty of inventory in your range (I think).

Re: First time home buyer needs some help
Thanks for all the info, I will definitely look in those areas.
How did those areas make out in Sandy, we ended up with over 5 feet of water in our basement where we are currently renting and are trying to avoid buying in an area where that would happen again. Is there any specific areas of those towns I should avoid to escape flooding in case of another hurricane?
How is it near the airport in in the Ronkonkoma/Holbrook area, is it very loud and busy by the airport?
Thanks again for all the info

We're a couple of miles north of LIE, right by the lake and I've heard a plane once, maybe twice in the nearly 2 years since we've been here. We didn't look south of the LIE because we weren't sure if it was going to be loud by the airport.

The airport is 2 blocks over from where I live and you would never know it. My area is not in the commercial flight path, so no effect on us. We get the occassional recreational plane.
