First sippy/straw cup
Playtex little grippers. Started about 6 months with the small one that youcan squeeze so the water comes up a bbit to help baby realize it's there.
No sippy cups, hard or soft spout. Straws are better for oral muscular development.

Re: First sippy/straw cup
I did 7 months--playtex little gripper. I couldn't find the one you squeeze, which I used for DD1, so I put a little water in a straw and covered top with my finger. I put the straw in her mouth and let go and as the water came down, she started sucking. Then I gave the cup, she started sucking right away.

Exactly the same here. We used the smaller one though because it has no valve, it only leaks if the cap is open and cold liquid is warming up to room temperature and expanding. The fact that it has no valve, however, is why you can squeeze it and push the liquid up to teach your baby to drink from a straw.

Re: First sippy/straw cup
I personally hated that little gripper one. It leaked everywhere and my kid didn't like it. For DS2 we just started him on one with a weight at the bottom of the straw so he can tip the cup any which way and still get liquid. I think it's munchkin brand.

Playtex lil gripper, never had leaking issues. Loved it. and dd got the hang of it after a few months. It takes time but just keep giving it your child every day and don't give up.

Thanks again! The store had both the munchkin and the playtex so I got one of each and will test them out this weekend.

Here's a stupid question--my daughter turns 6 months tomorrow, she can't hold her own bottle yet--should I be giving her a sippy? Can you give water to a 6 month old? She's mostly formula fed (I am a horrible low supplier and fight to get even one ounce a day ) and we just started cereals a month ago and fruit about 2 weeks ago or so.
