First MIL vent!

First MIL vent!

I love my MIL but she's so G-D pushy!

DS is only 3 weeks old and has been exclusively breast fed until this week. Even then, we're only supplementing with a bottle of BM which I've pumped. On Sunday we brought a bottle of BM to IL's house so that we could see if DS would take the bottle. I had only put a little more than an ounce of BM in the bottle, and I was there to nurse DS after the bottle.

MIL was shocked to see how little it "appeared" I was feeding DS and kept saying that, "With my boys I always gave them at least 8oz of formula and it disappeared." and "You're not feeding him enough." and "I'm sure he's going to be hungry in 2 minutes." and "He's never going to gain weight if you don't feed him."

Uhmm, do you realize he was born at over 9lbs and that he nurses every two hours for 30+min. at a time? Do you realize he has gained so much weight that he's now almost 11lbs at 3 weeks old? He's also already outgrown his 3mos clothes and is wearing 6-9 mos outfits. I even put him in his car seat yesterday and had to re-adjust the straps because he doesn't fit in it with the same configuration as a week ago. Plus, he also gives us 3 poopy diapers a day. DOES THIS SOUND LIKE HE'S NOT EATING?

I'm just upset because tonight I have to go to a baby shower and DH would have been home alone with DS (and a pumped bottle of BM), but DH just called to say that MIL is going to come help with DS (INSTEAD OF GOING TO THE BABY SHOWER SHE ALREADY RSVP'd to!)....

Re: First MIL vent!

My son was over 9 lbs at birth, is 4 months old and is now drinking 8 oz at a feeding, which is on the high side for his age from what I have seen and read. Your MIL's memory of feeding her kids at this age seems shaky to me Chat Icon

You are doing a great job - don't let her get under your skin.

OMG i feel your pain. Chat Icon

instead of "not feeding DS enough", however, I get to hear all about how I'm spoiling my 2mth old (and have been since BIRTH) because I enjoy holding him. GOD forbid. I want to say "yes, your right, I should put him down and make sure he has no human contact until he's 5".

My MIL & mother made me nuts over not feeding him enough because I was breastfeeding or he looked like he lost weight.

Once the ped confirmed he gained weight, I told them to knock it off.

Don't let her get to you. I'm guessing it's been at least 20 years since she feed the baby & can't remember. No newborn takes an 8oz bottle in one feeding.

Let the games begin - because the powershift has begun & now you're the mama!Chat Icon

I have a MIL from H-E-double hockey stick... My DD is 15 months old, and I'm starting to learn to finally just ignore her.

Does your DH say anything to her?

stick to your guns, doesn't sound like he needs anything else!

When your MIL had her sons, they pushed formula like it was better than BM. I think now we all know better than that, and if you can keep him solely on BM he isn't missing anything!

you are doing a great job, and keep it up!

Re: First MIL vent!

oh btw my mil seemed to push formula also when i brought olivia home.. i think bc they want to feed the babies.. or they have a guilty feeling bc they didnt do it.. whatever it is I felt the same thing I got statements like "maybe you should try formula its not poison" "my kids slept through the night after 6 days" "formula is heavier you should try it maybe Olivia will sleep better"

olivia was very gassy as a newborn and formula would have made it worse I was just as frustrtated hang in there I know you want to be nice so ask to bring the baby to the shower hahaha say you cant pump or baby not taking bottle so you can bring him Chat Icon

You're right - It actually is still up in the air whether or not I will leave DS when I go to the shower tonight. His next feeding will be around 6pm just before I leave for the shower and if he's cranky or fussy I might just need to take him with me so I can nurse him at the shower! Wouldn't that be great? MIL would show up to "help" DH with this his first hours alone with DS and oops - no baby there.

Yes, DH does say things to her in my defense. He tells her to not worry about his feeding routines because DS is weighing in just fine and that she should let us make our own decisions about OUR child. Then she gives him a guilt trip that he made her feel bad simply for caring about her grandson. Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: First MIL vent!

I doubt they were drinking 8oz at 3 weeks! My DD ins now drinking 6oz and she is almost 10 weeks. Relatives can be a pain. My mom is always saying that I am over feeding DD. Chat Icon

My daughter is a 7 month bf baby and uess what? She just finished her first 7 oz bottle last week. Usually she only drinks 4-5 oz. MILs can be such PIA.
Good luck dealing.

Re: First MIL vent!

Oh geez!! DD ate 8 oz at one feeding at 4 weeks old and her pediatrician had a heart attack and told me to NEVER allow anyone to give her that much to eat again. She said *rule of thumb* at that age is no more oz than weeks of age up to 8 weeks (there are of course exceptions to the rule).

Babies eat when they need to!!!I'm sure you know this, but why do our MIL's and mom's feel the need to tell us we need to feed our kids more.

I'm sure you are doing a great job. Pay her no mind. Chat Icon

Re: First MIL vent!

Update- I went to the baby shower without DS - he fed like a champ just before I left and then DH gave him 4oz (Chat Icon ) while I was gone. Both ILs came over and hung out with DH while I was at the shower and then when I got home, they both split within 5 minutes of my return....hmmmmm.
If they only knew I also have another shower tomorrow!
Thanks, ladies, for all your support!
