First day at daycare tomorrow...i'm terrified and so sad

After a year of being home with DS I finally took the leap and went back to work...mostly because I have no choice and I need an income. I found a fantastic woman very close to my job who runs an in-home daycare. DS loved her when we met her last week, the rates are great, the set up in good, location is perfect. I'm just SO nervous about leaving him all day, everyday Chat Icon And it KILLS me that by the time I pick him up everyday its time for dinner and then bed. I feel like I wont spend any time with him.

So, tomorrow is his first day at daycare and my first day back to work. I just hope I dont spend the whole day worrying about him. I have a feeling I'm going to cry my eyes out after I drop him off.

Any advice from other daycare mommies?? How do you do it? I have the biggest pit in my stomach...Chat Icon

I was a daycare provider for almost 10 years and I saw this all the time. I think the most important thing is to go in there with the thought that he will have a good day. Kids adapt well, and they love being social with other kids. Sure he will miss you but by the end of the week it will become second nature to him. Don't hang on saying goodbye because he will sense you are uncomfortable leaving him which may make him upset. I've seen a lot of moms take their baby's blankets with them to work, seems silly but some say it really helps. Call the provider during the day to check in on him.

its hard, but you'll get into a routine and it will feel like 2nd nature.

Luckily for me DH had done the drop off and pick ups b/c of my train schedules. With my new job now I will be doing drop off/pickup. I remember that first day getting dropped off at the train station. It felt like someone stuck a knife in my heart. It got better as the days went on.

So it will be rough, but call the sitter as many times as you need to during the day. It will make you feel connected to DS during the day.Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

such good advice especially with the saying goodbye thing..one thing i have learned is to make good byes short, sweet and postive! especially when they are older and cry when you leave. if i hang too long or give in my DD only gets worse. also thanks for sharing this as a daycare provider-it;s nice to hear from the other side! to the OP: the first day will be the hardest...even the first month in addition. it will get easier with time as you fall into a routine and everyone gets used to the new life/reality. hang in there-i feel for you! i have been there! i am there every september when i go back to work. its the first day all over again and it's the worst Chat Icon

i am so with you, DS begins daycare on the 30th Chat Icon Chat Icon reading this post made me teary.

i am so sad that i have to leave him with strangers - though they wont be strangers for long ... and that by the time i pick him up and get home with him, its time for us to eat, his bath, bottle and bedtime Chat Icon

BUT, i think about my niece and how much she LOVES daycare and how great it was for her socially Chat Icon

it is MUCH harder on us than it is on them Chat Icon the first few days are rough, but pretty soon, he will be crying not to leave when you go to pick him up Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I remember the first day I left my DD to go to work, she was only 8 weeks old and I cried my eyes out that whole week. But each day it got a little easier. You are lucky that you were able to stay hoem and bond with him for a whole year. Try to just think of it as DS going to school. I'm sure he will have a great time and will enjoy playing with the other kids in daycare. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon
