Field trips---- bus issues

My son is 5 and afraid to take the school bus (long story and I won't make him go on one).
Anyway, I got a memo from school that they are taking 2 field trips soon. One is local and one is not...
How much flack am I going to take if I ask if I can drive him myself? I know parents did it when I was in school and they did it when I worked in a preschool a few years back... I am all for chaperoning while I am there. Or I will just drop him off and wait..My friends daughter has the same issue with buses and she just keeps her home on trip days..

I don't think they will let you due to insurance and liability. He might surprise you and do great on the bus with his friends. A field trip is different than taking the bus to/from school and has a whole different "vibe". DD refused to take the bus in K and 1st but did go on field trips. The first trip I actually followed the bus, just in case, but she did great.

You can also ask the teacher to create a social story about how buses are fun for field trips and that may help him a little bit.

Our school makes it clear. Its the bus or no trip at all.

AJ loves buses.. I hate them (but she has never learned that).

You may be allowed to ride the bus with them. If not, maybe keeping him home is the best bet.

This. I'd ask about being a chaperone on the trip.

We've had parents bring their children and meet us on field trips. They did the trip along side of us, but they technically were not with the class. So say it was a trip to white post, they had to pay to have the child enter and then for their own food, pony ride, train ride, etc.

I was going to suggest this.
What is to stop you from taking your child to that place on the day the class is going?
And just meet up with them
They can't stop you from doing that.

Since he is so young still I would try to help him through his fear and get him excited about the trip.

Our district doesn't allow that. Most places they go to are not open to the general public at the time they go, so just tagging along wouldn't work. My DD doesn't ride the bus to/from school, but she hasn't had an issue on the bus for the one field trip they did. Oh, and here, you chaperone, you have to ride the bus, so maybe you can ask if you can chaperone and he will feel comfy with you there.

Re: Field trips---- bus issues

I would be surprised if they let you. At our field trip with public school, teachers count kids multiple times. Bus drivers count kids. On our last field trip that I went on, teachers were crystal clear that we could not leave or it would mess up their counts.

Re: Field trips---- bus issues

He has high functioning autism and major sensory issues .He doesn't handle other people driving him. He won't let anyone drive him except myself and his uncle. He wouldn't even let my late husband drive him. It is a sensory thing.. He may be ok on the ten minute bus ride to the library. But the 45 minute ride to the planetarium won't happen. Even with me on the bus. We tried taking the regular bus here a few times and had to get off!!! It isn't something that he is getting over anytime soon. I guess he will get a day off of school then..

If you do that then the child will not allowed to be apart of any activities that the class will be doing and that might be more stressful than taking the bus. DD is also HFA with severe anxiety and only drives in the car with me and it took me a long time to get her to get on the bus but as I mentioned before, talk to his teacher, do social stories and let him try. Follow the bus and you can always drive him back if need be.

Please contact his teacher. Based on his needs I'm sure something can be worked out.

My DD felt the same way in kindergarten until I told her she cannot attend the trip unless she took the bus. I was so worried about her and she wound up loving it. Maybe this will be the case with him. Otherwise, I would ask to chaperone.

Yes, this. The school should be willing to make accomodations or an exception for him. Does he have an iep? If so, this could/should maybe be spelled out there. I hope it turns out ok!

He has an IEP and I will talk to his teacher tomorrow. Thank you... He just cried when I mentioned the bus. Even when I told him I would go with him..

Re: Field trips---- bus issues

I am skipping the whole trip. Not worth the aggravation of it all.. It is a movie and lunch at the planetarium. He doesn't like going to the movies because they are too loud for him so it would be wasted money IMO... I will do a Mommy and me day with him.
