fibroid

long story short, dr at AFS mentioned that i have a huge 2 inch fibroid outside uterus. Do not ask me why any of the REs never said anything.Chat Icon
Did anyone have this? What was the course of action? Was it removed?
Thanks

Re: fibroid

I also have a large fibroid on the outside top of my uterus. It's shaped like the handle on the lid of a pot - I have pics from my lap surgery.Chat Icon

No RE has ever been concerned with it but my GYN did say that I may have to have a c-section if I do get pregnant, which is the least of my worries!

Re: fibroid

I had a very large fibroid and had surgery to remove it before I started TTCing. Fibroids are quite common. I'm just shocked that no RE ever told you anything about it? Chat Icon

Re: fibroid

I do not have any fibroids but many of the women in my family do...its all about location and size with fibroids. it may not affect ttc-ing at all. my mother eventually had surgery in her late 40's.

it is very strange that your other REs never saw it before?

Mine was 3 cm a year and a half ago and, no, I was not advised to have it removed because it is outside the uterus - sitting on top.

Re: fibroid

I have 4 fibroids outside of the uterus. Never even knew about them until getting treatment for infertility. I've been to two RE's and neither had been concerned about it. I also did some research. These types of fibroids ordinarily do not have to be removed as opposed to fibroids inside of the uterine cavity or uterine wall. My RE mentioned that removal could cause more harm than good due to possible scarring. I was also told that while these fibroids do not ordinarily need to be removed, that if you have continued issues, there is a slight possiblity that you could be the exception. I think I also read that these types of fibroids do not need to be removed in Dr. Schoolcraft from CCRM's book.

thank you for response. Do you know the size of them? I am trying to uderstand this thing, but I feel i am lacking the details. All I was told is that it is outside uterus. But I am not understanding, if that means on the outside wall of the uterus or just in my stomach?Chat Icon

Do they grow? I am concrned that mine is growing too fast. I do not think it was there 2 months agoChat Icon

Yup they grow. Mine was growing pretty fast and that is part of the reason that it had to be removed. That, and the location. Mine was intramural, which means within the uterine lining.

My largest was I think 4.2cm...not that small at all. I was told that they could grow...especially when you are taking fertility meds because of the hormones...and that they could grow in pregnancy.

When they say outside of the uterus, I THINK they mean on the outside wall of the uterus...I think that they grow on/inside the uterus and not freestanding in the stomach...but someone might know better than I.

Honestly..I am concerned....but I am also not willing to have surgery just yet if I could do more harm than good. I don't know if I will have them removed just in case if I continue to have problems getting and staying pregnant.

At the size you mentioned...they probably were there two months ago. It's interesting that you say that no one told you about your fibroids. The same thing happened to me at my prior center. After multiple u/s's..no one ever mentioned the fibroids to me...only at my very last u/s was it mentioned...I was stunned. Maybe because they are not concerned they do not mention it or maybe because they think we already know...I don't know...but you would think it should be mentioned. Just goes to show...you have to ask about EVERYTHING!!

Re: fibroid

The majority of the women on my mother's side have a long history of fibroids. The majority of them had them removed and some have/still have them. They just need to be monitored. Ask your RE why they did not see this before, I am guessing that this is not an overnight thing.

Re: fibroid

I have two fibriods they are outside the uterus and therefore my RE has never suggested getting them removed. That said, they did cause me complications while pregnant...they tend to grow, and if you dont drink enough water (and I mean double what you're SUPPOSED to drink) they can break down, causing bleeding and preterm labor. They can also be painful. BUT and I asked my high risk OB if he recommended me removing them after DS since they caused me so many issues and we were planning on TTC#2 and he said no...that in the long run it would cause more harm than good and that scaring leading to fertility issues could occur (like I need any MORE fertility issues).Chat Icon

Re: fibroid

i did more research into this. the type of fibroid that I have is called pedunculated myoma. It is a fibroid that attaches itself with a stalk ( imagine a watermelon with a little tail). So, this is outside the uterus, so how this could cause scarring of uterus is not clear to me. But.. these fibroids have bigger concern - sometimes this tail ( stalk) twists and causes no blood supply to fibroid. Fibroid starts to die, causing horrendous pain and possible infection. Then it has to be removed immediately.
I dug up some info, if anyone interested FM me.

dr B said not to touch it.
I think i will be getting a consult with a gyn.

Wow...good job on the research. The only thing I would say is that I would be inclinded to listen to Dr. B. Your OB/GYN does not have the same goal as your RE....as such, any recommendations that your OB/GYN makes may not be in your best interests when it comes to TTC. I know that you will check everything out...but I just wanted to say that.
