Re: feta cheese
I've been eating all along this one and with DD1, it's more likely than not the cheese is pasteurized, most restaurants will NOT serve unpasteurized cheese

Re: feta cheese
It is illegal in NYS for a restaurant to serve unpasturized cheese (obviously ask them anyway) so eat all you like! And get some for home, too! Pasturization is the key!

I have no idea whether it's legal, but I have asked at many restaurants and not all the cheese has been pastuerized

Re: feta cheese
you know what I don't get - If ALL cheese has to be pasturized in the US then why does my dr's office (and many dr's) give out sheets of what not to eat and it is still on there? If is was all safe and we had nothing to worry about - why would doctor's continue to tell pregnant women to stay away from ALL soft cheese?

I don't believe that all cheese has to be pasteurized in the US. Right now, cheese made with raw (unpasteurized) milk is 'legal' as long as it has been aged 60 days. In theory, that is supposed to kill off bacteria, but the FDA is considering revoking this because they are seeing outbreaks from raw aged raw milk cheese.
Another reason that doctors suggest staying away from soft cheese, even if it is pasteurized, is that it has a greater tendency to become contaminated with listeria.

All cheese in the US is not pasteurized - A few weeks ago I was browsing Whole Foods amazingly expansive cheese dept and I asked one of the counter guys if all the cheese was pasteurized and if it wasn't how would I know. He told me that the unpasteurized cheese was marked "raw." I don't know if it's like that at all stores, but if you ever question it (like it's not marked "pasteurized") then just ask!
