I don't think it's either - I think that people who have a deeply, deeply shameful interest/habit, or whatever you call it, are attracted to the profession because in their mind their dedication to a higher purpose "offsets" the sin. Perhaps they believe that if they become a priest they will have more incentive/guidance to resist temptation... who knows.
What an awful thing.....how can any human being do harm to a child is beyond my comprehension.....
to BXgell2 response.....If that was the case, it would only be for priests because they have the mandatory celibacy...but how about all the pedophiles that are teachers for example......or other professions...how would that be explained then?
And I agree with DPLI when she posted

I am by noooooo means trying to explain the mindset of every pedophile on the earth. I'm not a pedophile so to be quite honest, I don't know what goes on in their head. I'm not saying every priest is a pedophile, just that I can see why that profession would attract someone who is deeply shameful. Does that mean every pedophile wants to be a priest? Of course not...

I'm going to try to find out info on it.
I grew up in Rockville Centre. There are a ton of churches there. Do you know whether it was Catholic, Lutheran, etc?

I didn't mean to insinuate that celibacy leads to pedophilia--- at all. I just went off on a tangent really cuz mom & I were discussing this last night. I think if they let priests marry, we would have more priests and pehaps the Church would be much stricter about who can work with the children and so on.
It is all very disturbing.... we all went to Catholic school and I know my brother was spanked, pants down, over a Brother's knee in High School. Dad took him out the next day.
